Removing and installing vane pump - Vehicles with 6-cyl. 2V engine — AUDI

Removing and installing vane pump - Vehicles with 6-cyl. 2V engine on Audi: 20 steps. What to remove, in what order, and what to check after.

On the Audi six-cylinder two-valve engines covered by the platform codes listed below, the power steering vane pump comes out together with its holder rather than on its own. Work starts from above: engine top cover and belt cover off, then the poly V-belt is slackened. The tensioner layout depends on the car's age, so check whether you are swinging it with a 15 mm ring spanner or a 10 mm Allen key before pinning it with mandrel 3204. The pulley is supported with water pump wrench V.A.G 1590 while it is unscrewed, the ignition cables are pulled from the coils, the suction pipe is pinched off and both hydraulic lines are detached. Holder and pump are then lifted out and split on the bench. Getting the ignition leads back on the right coils is the part people trip over.

20 steps

🧭 Before you start

Remove the top cover and belt cover, slacken and lock the tensioner, and take the belt off after marking its direction. Hold and remove the pulley, unplug the ignition cables, clamp the suction pipe and disconnect the pressure and suction pipes. Unbolt the holder, lift it out complete with the pump and separate the two on the bench. Reassembly runs in reverse, with the belt refitted in its marked direction and the ignition cables assigned by cylinder number.

Fits: platform code 4A

  • Special tools named: 3094, 15 mm ring spanner

Don't miss

  • Mark the belt's running direction with chalk or felt-tip before removal; a reversed used belt can fail.
  • Ignition cables 6 and 1 share coil C; assign cables 2, 3, 4 and 5 the same way.
  • Lock the tensioner with mandrel 3204 in holes (A) and (B) before lifting the belt off.
  • Pinch off the suction pipe with hose clamps 3094 before disconnecting anything.
  • As general practice, refill and bleed the steering after refitting, then check every joint for leaks.

📋 Procedure

  1. Detach the engine top cover .
  2. Detach the poly V-belt cover .
  3. Slacken off the poly V-belt: Up to Model Year 1991 , as of Model Year 1992 .
  4. Support the pulley with a water pump wrenchV.A.G 1590 if applicable and unscrew.
  5. Pull the ignition cables out of the ignition coils (Item 10).

  1. Pinch off the suction pipe with hose clamps 3094.
  2. Detach the pressure and suction pipe.
  3. Unscrew the holder (Item 9) and remove together with the vane pump.
  4. Take out the vane pump with holder.
  5. Screw the vane pump bolts out of the holder and take out the vane pump.
  6. The ignition cables must be assigned in line with the numbering
  7. Assign ignition cables 6 and 1 to ignition coil (C).
  8. Assign ignition cables 2, 3, 4 and 5 in the same manner. [Note: Mark the direction of the poly V-belt with chalk or a felt-tip pen prior to removal. Running a used belt in the opposite direction could destroy it. Pay attention to correct positioning on pulleys when fitting the belt.]
  9. Unscrew the ignition coils with holder and remove the upper belt guard.
  10. To slacken off the poly V-belt, swivel the poly V-belt tensioner in (arrow direction) using a 15 mm ring spanner.
  11. Insert the mandrel3204 to secure.
  12. Detach the poly V-belt from the pulley. [Note: Mark the direction of the poly V-belt with chalk or a felt-tip pen prior to removal. Running a used belt in the opposite direction could destroy it. Pay attention to correct positioning on pulleys when fitting the belt.]
  13. To slacken off the poly V-belt, swivel the poly V-belt tensioner in (arrow direction) using a 10 mm Allen key.
  14. Lock the tensioner in position by inserting the mandrel 3204 in the locating holes (A) and (B).
  15. Detach the poly V-belt.

Who makes these pages, and how

TorqFix was built by a mechanic — after a 2,700 km drive with five roadside repairs that no diagnostic tool could explain.

The figures on this page come from manufacturer workshop documentation and are shown as they are. The page is assembled automatically from that data — it is not written by an AI. The AI works in the chat, where it answers for your specific car. It writes nothing here.

Variants of the same model differ. Cross-check torque against the factory manual for your engine before final tightening.
