Removing and installing timing chain cover (top): Audi A1 (BHK, BHL, BPU, BYT, …)
Step-by-step removing and installing timing chain cover (top) for the Audi A1: 24 steps. What to remove, in what order, and what to check after.
Removing the upper timing chain cover on the Audi A1 (8X, 2010–2018) with the TFSI engine codes listed below takes a fair amount of top-end dismantling. Coolant pressure is relieved, the engine cover and camshaft control valves N205/N318 removed, a coolant hose detached and plugged, and the earth wires, ignition coil connectors and wiring duct moved clear. The coolant pipe is pressed gently aside, the dipstick guide tube unclipped, the expansion tank moved and the engine mounting removed. Six bolts then release the cover, two of them reached through the engine support with T10370. Success depends on the sealing: surfaces clean and grease-free, sealant beads no thicker than specified, and the cover fitted within 5 minutes of applying sealant.
🧭 Before you start
Relieve coolant pressure, remove the engine cover and camshaft control valves, and clear the coolant hose, earths, coil connectors, wiring duct, coolant pipe, dipstick tube and expansion tank. Remove the engine mounting and the six cover bolts, using T10370 for bolts 3 and 5. Clean all sealant residue with a cloth over the head, cut the nozzle to approx. 1.5 mm, lay the beads and fit the cover inside 5 minutes using the tightening sequence. Refit the control valves, engine mounting and cover panel.
Fits: Audi A1 (8X, 2010–2018)
- Renewed: seals
Don't miss
- Do not bend the coolant pipe into a new shape; press it aside only slightly.
- Cover the cylinder head with a clean cloth so old sealant cannot fall into the oil passages.
- Cut the sealant nozzle at approx. 1.5 mm and keep beads no thicker than specified.
- Fit the cover within 5 minutes of applying sealant and follow the tightening sequence.
- Renew the seals on bolts 3 and 5, and check the sealant use-by date before starting.

📋 Procedure
- Open filler cap (1) on coolant expansion tank briefly to relieve residual pressure in cooling system. [Note: Disregard (item 2).]
- Remove engine cover panel .
- Remove inlet camshaft control valve 1N205/exhaust camshaft control valve 1N318.
- Release hose clip (2) and detach coolant hose.
- Seal off open lines and connections with clean plugs from engine bung setVAS 6122. [Note: Disregard (item 1).]
- Remove nuts (arrows) and move earth wires clear.
- Release electrical connectors (1 … 4) and unplug from ignition coils simultaneously (arrows).
- Release fastener (arrow), detach wiring duct upwards from bracket and press forwards.
- ⚠ Risk of damage to coolant line.Do not attempt to bend coolant line to a different shape. — Remove bolts (1, 2, 3) and carefully press coolant pipe slightly towards left.
- Remove bolt (1) for dipstick guide tube.
- Unclip guide tube for oil dipstick from timing chain cover (top) (arrow). [Note: Disregard (item 2).]
- Remove bolts (arrows).
- Unplug electrical connector (1) for coolant shortage indicator switch F66 and move coolant expansion tank to side.
- Remove engine mounting .
- Unscrew bolts (1 to 6) and remove timing chain cover (top). [Note: Unscrew bolts (3, 5) through engine support using socket, AF 4 mm T10370.]
- Remove bolts (3, 5) if necessary. [Note: Renew seals.]
- ⚠ Make sure sealant residue does not enter lubrication system.Place a clean cloth over the exposed section of the cylinder head. — Remove sealant residue on bearing saddle.
- Clean surfaces; they must be free of oil and grease. [Note: Note the use-by date of the sealant.]
- Cut off nozzle of tube at front marking (nozzle ∅ approx. 1.5 mm).
- ⚠ Make sure lubrication system is not clogged by excess sealant. The bead of sealant must not be thicker than specified. — Apply beads of sealant (arrows) onto clean oil seals as shown in illustration. [Note: The timing chain cover (top) must be installed within 5 minutes of applying the sealant.]
- Install timing chain cover (top); tightening sequence .
- Install camshaft control valve 1N205 / exhaust camshaft control valve 1N318.
- Install engine mountings .
- Install engine cover panel .

Who makes these pages, and how
TorqFix was built by a mechanic — after a 2,700 km drive with five roadside repairs that no diagnostic tool could explain.
The figures on this page come from manufacturer workshop documentation and are shown as they are. The page is assembled automatically from that data — it is not written by an AI. The AI works in the chat, where it answers for your specific car. It writes nothing here.
Variants of the same model differ. Cross-check torque against the factory manual for your engine before final tightening.
