Removing and installing suspension strut/coil spring: Audi TT Mk1
Step-by-step removing and installing suspension strut/coil spring for the Audi TT Mk1: 25 steps, 1 torque figure.
On cars with platform code 8N, the front suspension strut and coil spring come out with the wheel bearing housing left on the car. After the wheel, coupling rod, brake hose clip, speed sensor wire and noise insulation are off, the drive shaft is unbolted from the gearbox flange and tied up. The pinch bolt between bearing housing and strut comes out, spreader 3424 opens the slot, and the housing is pulled down off the strut tube and wired to the subframe. Fitting the new strut is the reverse, with the mounting greased and the turret fixing tightened to 60 Nm. The spring compressor work and noting the pinch bolt direction are what count.
🧭 Before you start
Remove the wheel, coupling rod, brake hose clip, speed sensor wire and noise insulation, then free the drive shaft and tie it up. Remove the pinch bolt, spread the housing with 3424 and pull it off the strut, wiring it to the subframe. Fit the strut with lubricated mounting at 60 Nm, raise the bearing housing on a gearbox jack to refit the bolt, remove 3424. Strip or build up the strut with V.A.G 1752/1 and its adapter.
Fits: Audi TT Mk1 (8N)
- Special tools named: 3424
Don't miss
- Note the installation direction of the pinch bolt between wheel bearing housing and strut.
- Coat the strut mounting with assembly lubricant G 294 421 A1 before fitting.
- Strut to suspension turret takes 60 Nm.
- Do not press the gearbox jack against the ball joint when raising the bearing housing.
- Make sure the coil spring is seated correctly in adapter V.A.G 1752/4 before compressing.

🔩 Torque settings
Values can differ between engine variants — check the code stamped on your block.
| Torque | Fastener / step |
|---|---|
| 60 Nm (44 lb-ft) | Install suspension strut and secure to suspension turret |
ℹ️ Always cross-check the exact figure against your vehicle's factory manual before final tightening — a wrong torque can damage the engine. These values are extracted from workshop data and may not cover every variant or revision.
📋 Procedure
- Remove wheels.
- Detach coupling rod from suspension strut on both sides of the vehicle.
- Pull spring clip out from bracket and detach brake hose.
- Detach wire for speed sensor from suspension strut.
- Remove noise insulation panel.
- Unbolt drive shaft from flange shaft on gearbox.
- Tie up drive shaft with wire.
- Remove bolt and nut securing wheel bearing housing/suspension strut. Note installation position of bolt. -See illustration-.
- Insert special tool 3424 into slot (arrow).
- Turn ratchet through 90° and detach from 3424.
- Press brake disc towards suspension strut by hand.
- Pull wheel bearing housing downwards off shock absorber tube.
- Tie wheel bearing housing to subframe with wire (arrow).
- Before inserting suspension strut, coat suspension strut mounting (arrows) with assembly lubricant G 294 421 A1.
- Install suspension strut and secure to suspension turret. Tightening torque: 60 Nm — 60 Nm (44 lb-ft)
- Locate suspension strut on wheel bearing housing.
- Remove wire from wheel bearing housing.
- Using gearbox jack, carefully raise wheel bearing housing until bolt securing suspension strut/wheel bearing housing can be inserted. [Note: Do not press against the ball joint with the gearbox jack.]
- At the same time, push brake disc by hand towards suspension strut.
- Take out spreader tool (3424).
- Compress coil spring with suspension strut tensionerV.A.G 1752/1- until the upper spring plate is free.
- Unscrew hexagon nut from piston rod.
- Take off individual parts of suspension strut and coil spring with suspension strut tensionerV.A.G 1752/1-.
- Ensure that coil spring is seated correctly in adapterV.A.G 1752/4 (arrow).
- Fit coil spring with suspension strut tensionerV.A.G 1752/1- onto bottom spring plate.

Who makes these pages, and how
TorqFix was built by a mechanic — after a 2,700 km drive with five roadside repairs that no diagnostic tool could explain.
The figures on this page come from manufacturer workshop documentation and are shown as they are. The page is assembled automatically from that data — it is not written by an AI. The AI works in the chat, where it answers for your specific car. It writes nothing here.
Variants of the same model differ. Cross-check torque against the factory manual for your engine before final tightening.
