Removing and installing side vent control motor V262 — AUDI
Removing and installing side vent control motor V262 on Audi: 16 steps. What to remove, in what order, and what to check after.
The side vent control motor V262 on the R8 (42, 2007–2015) sits behind the dash panel at the air distribution housing. With the ignition off and the dash panel removed (the central tube stays in), an intermediate piece comes off with its harness, the motor connector is marked and unplugged, and the motor is unbolted; a ratchet ring spanner T40083 helps with the awkward bolts. The connecting element is pressed off the motor, while the one on the vent shaft stays at the air conditioning unit. The fiddly part is refitting: the mount on the motor shaft must be in the correct position so the coupling engages without force, and the two connecting elements must line up. Finish with fault memory, basic setting and final control diagnosis.
🧭 Before you start
Switch off the ignition, remove the dash panel and the intermediate piece, mark and unplug the V262 connector and unbolt the motor. Press the connecting element off the motor, leaving the shaft-side element on the air conditioning unit. Check the motor shaft mount position, attach the connecting element without force, install the motor with both elements aligned and refit the dash panel. Read and erase the event memory, then run basic setting and final control diagnosis.

Don't miss
- Mark the V262 connector; identical connectors nearby can be swapped.
- Leave connecting element E on the side vent shaft at the air conditioning unit.
- The connecting element must engage without force; if not, the shaft mount is turned 180°.
- To reposition the shaft, feed contacts 5 and 6 from 12 V through a 5 A fuse.
- Basic setting is required after installation, then final control diagnosis.

📋 Procedure
- Switch off the ignition.
- Remove the dash panel 70. [Note: The central tube is not to be removed.]
- Screw out the bolts (arrows).
- Detach the intermediate piece (A) and lay it aside together with the wiring harness (B) attached to the air duct.
- To avoid possible interchange with other identical connectors, mark the connector (C) to the side vent control motor V262.
- Unplug the connector (C) at the side vent control motor V262(B).
- Screw out the bolts (A).
- Detach the side vent control motor V262. [Note: Inaccessible bolts can be screwed out using the ratchet ring spanner T40083.]
- Use a screwdriver to carefully press the connecting element (D) off the side vent control motor V262(B). [Note: Leave the connecting element (E) to the side vent shaft in position at the air conditioning unit.Removing connecting element to shaft for side vent (E).]
- Check the position of the mount (B) on the control motor shaft (must be in the position shown). [Note: The connecting element (A) is only to be attached in the position in which it engages without having to exert force as shown. If pre-tension is required to attach the connecting element, check whether the mount (B) on the control motor shaft has been turned through 180°.If the mount (B) on the control motor shaft is not in the position shown, use an adapter lead for example or a test cable from the adapter setV.A.G 1594C to connect contacts "“5”" and "“6”" of the control motor by way of a 5 A fuse to a 12 V battery.Turn the control motor until the mount (B) is in the position shown and the connecting element can be attached without pre-tension. The direction of rotation can be reversed by interchanging positive and negative. The control motor shaft has no stop. It rotates constantly if voltage is applied between contacts "“5”" and "“6”" of the control motor connector.]
- Attach the connecting element (A) for the shaft to the side vent to the side vent control motor V262(B).
- Install the control motor, paying attention to the correct mutual positioning of the two connecting elements (D) and (E). [Note: In cases of doubt regarding the correct mutual positioning of the two connecting elements (D) and (E), use an adapter lead for example or a test cable from the adapter setV.A.G 1594C to connect contacts "“5”" and "“6”" of the control motor by way of a 5 A fuse to a 12 V battery. Turn the control motor until an end position is reached (direction of rotation can be reversed by interchanging positive and negative) and in doing so observe the two connecting elements.]
- Install the dash panel 70.
- Interrogate the event recorder and erase any faults displayed.
- Implement basic setting.
- Implement final control diagnosis.

Who makes these pages, and how
TorqFix was built by a mechanic — after a 2,700 km drive with five roadside repairs that no diagnostic tool could explain.
The figures on this page come from manufacturer workshop documentation and are shown as they are. The page is assembled automatically from that data — it is not written by an AI. The AI works in the chat, where it answers for your specific car. It writes nothing here.
Variants of the same model differ. Cross-check torque against the factory manual for your engine before final tightening.
