Removing and installing Sachs clutch — AUDI
Removing and installing Sachs clutch on Audi: 11 steps. What to remove, in what order, and what to check after.
This is the Sachs clutch fitted behind a dual-mass flywheel, here on the VW Caddy III (2K) and the other platform code listed below, and it comes out once the gearbox is off. With counterhold 3067 in place, the pressure plate bolts are loosened in small steps in a diagonal sequence, the pressure plate and driven plate lifted away and the alignment dowel sleeves checked. The pressure plate's spring and rivet connections are inspected for cracks and looseness. On refitting, the driven plate is centred (mandrel 3176 on engines with the smaller crankshaft bore), the pressure plate goes onto its centring pins and the bolts are run down by hand before being tightened diagonally in small steps. Two rules govern it: plate and cover are renewed only as a pair, and the linings must sit fully on the flywheel.
🧭 Before you start
Remove the gearbox, fit counterhold 3067 and loosen the pressure plate bolts diagonally in small steps. Remove pressure plate and driven plate, check the dowel sleeves and inspect the spring and rivet connections. Centre the new driven plate, fit the pressure plate on its centring pins, run all bolts down by hand, then tighten diagonally in small steps and refit the gearbox.
Fits: VW Caddy III (2K, 2004–2015); platform code 2C0
- Renewed: clutch plate
Don't miss
- Renew the clutch plate and pressure plate only together, as a pair.
- Loosen and tighten the bolts diagonally and in small steps to avoid distorting the cover.
- Check the engine-to-gearbox dowel sleeves are fitted before the gearbox goes back.
- Centre the plate with mandrel 3176 on engines with the smaller crankshaft bore.
- Plate lining and pressure plate face must contact the flywheel fully before the bolts are torqued.

📋 Procedure
- Remove gearbox:
- Use counterhold3067 to loosen bolts.
- Loosen bolts in small steps in diagonal sequence.
- If stop (2) does not loosen, press pin towards dual-mass flywheel.
- Remove clutch pressure plate and clutch plate. [Note: You are only allowed to renew clutch plate and clutch pressure plate together.Check whether dowel sleeves for aligning engine and gearbox are fitted in cylinder block and install if necessary. If dowel sleeves are not fitted, difficulties shifting gears, clutch problems and possible noises from the gearbox (rattling of gears which are not engaged) could occur.]
- Check spring connections between clutch pressure plate and cover for cracks as well as rivet connections for secure seating. [Note: Replace clutch plate and clutch pressure plate having damaged or loose rivets.Select clutch plate and pressure plate according to engine code and Electronic Parts Catalogue.Clutch pressure plates are protected against corrosion and greased. Clean contact surface only. Otherwise, the service life of the clutch will be considerably reduced.Clean input shaft splines and, on used clutch plates, also clean hub splines; remove corrosion, and apply only a very thin coat of grease for clutch plate splines to splines Electronic Parts Catalogue. Then move clutch plate to and fro on input shaft until hub moves freely on shaft. Remove excessive grease! If the clutch has burnt out, thoroughly clean the clutch housing, flywheel and parts of the engine facing the gearbox in order to reduce the smell of burnt linings.]
- Insert counterhold3067 as shown in figure. [Note: On engines with a smaller diameter in crankshaft (arrow), centre clutch disc with centring mandrel3176.]
- Fit clutch pressure plate onto centring pins.
- Tighten all bolts evenly by hand until bolt head contacts clutch pressure plate.
- Tighten bolts diagonally and in small steps. [Note: Clutch pressure plate contact surface and clutch plate lining must make full contact with flywheel. Only then insert securing bolts.Tighten bolts in small steps diagonally in order not to damage centring holes of clutch pressure plate and centring pins of dual-mass flywheel.]

Who makes these pages, and how
TorqFix was built by a mechanic — after a 2,700 km drive with five roadside repairs that no diagnostic tool could explain.
The figures on this page come from manufacturer workshop documentation and are shown as they are. The page is assembled automatically from that data — it is not written by an AI. The AI works in the chat, where it answers for your specific car. It writes nothing here.
Variants of the same model differ. Cross-check torque against the factory manual for your engine before final tightening.
