Removing and installing refrigerator box J698 — AUDI
Removing and installing refrigerator box J698 on Audi: 24 steps. What to remove, in what order, and what to check after.
The refrigerator box J698 is part of the camper interior on the Transporter T5 and T6 based campers (7HC and 7EC). There is no mechanical difficulty here, but the cupboard unit has to be taken apart in the right order. With the ignition off, the flaps are unbolted, the mains plug comes off the onboard supply charger unit A11 and the connectors are released. The sink with gas cooker has to come out before the refrigerator box can be lifted out upwards. Two lid arrangements exist: from model year 2009 a variant was introduced with the gas strut bolted to the outside of the cupboard, and both are covered. The lid hinge and gas strut bolts go back with locking fluid and are only snugged up, not cranked.
🧭 Before you start
Switch off the ignition, remove the flaps, disconnect the mains plug from A11 and the connectors, and remove the screws on both sides. Take out the sink with gas cooker, unbolt the gas strut bracket and both hinges, remove the lid and lift the box out. On refit, fit the lid and secure the hinge and gas strut bolts with locking fluid, finger-tight or hand-tight as specified.
Fits: VW Transporter T5 (7H), VW Transporter T6 (7E)
Don't miss
- Switch off the ignition and disconnect the mains plug from A11 before unplugging anything.
- Check which lid version is fitted; the gas strut may be bolted outside the cupboard.
- Apply locking fluid D 000 600 A2 to the hinge and gas strut bracket bolts.
- Hinge bolts are tightened finger-tight only; overtightening can damage the cupboard fittings.

Who makes these pages, and how
TorqFix was built by a mechanic — after a 2,700 km drive with five roadside repairs that no diagnostic tool could explain.
The figures on this page come from manufacturer workshop documentation and are shown as they are. The page is assembled automatically from that data — it is not written by an AI. The AI works in the chat, where it answers for your specific car. It writes nothing here.
Variants of the same model differ. Cross-check torque against the factory manual for your engine before final tightening.
