Removing and installing rear wheel speed sensor: Audi A4 Cabriolet B6/B7 / A4 B6/B7

Step-by-step removing and installing rear wheel speed sensor for the Audi A4 Cabriolet B6/B7 / A4 B6/B7: 27 steps, 3 torque figures.

This covers the rear wheel speed sensor on Audis built on the 8E and 8H platform codes, where the page merges several variants that differ in how the sensor is held and what torque its bolt takes. The sensor sits in the wheel bearing housing behind the road wheel, held by a single bolt, with its lead clipped along cable brackets and passing through a grommet into the body under the rear seat, where the connector lives. On some versions the brake caliper has to be hung up out of the way to inspect the rotor. Two things matter: the sensor seal must be greased all round before it goes back in, and the rotor must be clean and undamaged, because a damaged one means a new outer joint on the drive shaft.

🧭 Before you start

Lift the car, remove the wheel, take out the sensor bolt and pull the sensor from the wheel bearing housing, then release the cable brackets and clips. Lift the rear seat, unplug the connector and press out the grommet to free the lead. Before refitting, check the rotor, grease the sensor seal with lubricating paste and route the wire exactly as it came out. Tighten the sensor bolt to the figure for your variant: 8 Nm, 10 Nm or 18 Nm.

Fits: Audi A4 Cabriolet B6/B7 (8H), Audi A4 B6/B7 (8E)

  • Renewed: outer joint, outer c

Don't miss

  • The bolt torque depends on variant: 8 Nm, 10 Nm or 18 Nm. Confirm which one applies before tightening.
  • Coat the sensor seal all round with lubricating paste so it slides in without tearing.
  • Inspect the rotor for damage or dirt; a damaged rotor comes only with a new outer C.V. joint.
  • Route the lead back along its original clips and brackets, clear of the brake hose and suspension.
  • Left and right sides share the same connector and grommet arrangement under the rear seat.

ℹ️ Always cross-check the exact figure against your vehicle's factory manual before final tightening — a wrong torque can damage the engine. These values are extracted from workshop data and may not cover every variant or revision.

📋 Procedure

Who makes these pages, and how

TorqFix was built by a mechanic — after a 2,700 km drive with five roadside repairs that no diagnostic tool could explain.

The figures on this page come from manufacturer workshop documentation and are shown as they are. The page is assembled automatically from that data — it is not written by an AI. The AI works in the chat, where it answers for your specific car. It writes nothing here.

Variants of the same model differ. Cross-check torque against the factory manual for your engine before final tightening.
