Removing and installing power steering pump (vehicles with 6-cylinder FSI engine, vehicles without dynamic steering) — AUDI

Removing and installing power steering pump (vehicles with 6-cylinder FSI engine, vehicles without dynamic steering) on Audi: 50 steps.

This power steering pump job covers the Audi A4 B8 and A5 coupe and Cabriolet (platform codes 8K, 8T and 8F) with the 6-cylinder FSI engine and without dynamic steering. The pump is belt-driven at the front of the engine, so the work starts with extracting fluid from the reservoir, clamping the suction and return hoses, and moving the coolant expansion tank aside. The poly V-belt is slackened and taken off the pump pulley only, the pulley is marked and unbolted, then the pressure line and suction hose are released and the pump unbolted from its bracket. Two points carry the job: never clamp near the return hose's non-return valve, and tighten the suction hose clip before the pump goes in, since there is no room afterwards.

50 steps

🧭 Before you start

Extract fluid, clamp the hoses, move the expansion tank aside and remove the belt from the pump pulley after marking its direction. Mark and remove the pulley, release the suction hose and pressure line, plug the openings and unbolt the pump and brackets. On refitting, fit the suction hose with the P marking aligned and a new clip at 4 mm dimension, prime the pump by turning the hub until fluid flows, bolt it in front bolts first, then fit the pressure line, pulley on its marks and belt. Fill, bleed and leak-check the system.

Fits: Audi A5 (8T, 2007–2016), Audi A5 Cabriolet (8F), Audi A4 B8 (8K, 2007–2015)

  • Opens: power steering fluid
  • Renewed: gaskets

Don't miss

  • Do not apply hose clamps near the non-return valve in the return hose.
  • Mark poly V-belt rotation direction; a used belt run backwards can break.
  • Transfer the pulley-to-hub marking to a new pump before fitting.
  • Tighten the suction hose clip before installing the pump; pliers will not reach it afterwards.
  • Prime a new pump with fluid and turn it until fluid flows from the pressure outlet.

📋 Procedure

  1. Raise vehicle on lifting platform.
  2. Lift off engine cover panel (arrows).
  3. Extract hydraulic fluid from reservoir with used oil collection and extraction unitV.A.G 1782.
  4. Clamp off suction hose (1) and return hose (2) using hose clamps3094.
  5. ⚠ Hose clamps up to 25 mm3094 must not be applied at any point near the non-return valve in the return hose (2). The non-return valve will otherwise be damaged. The non-return valve is located in the return hose (2) between the hose clips (arrows). — Remove noise insulation General body repairs, exterior66Noise insulation; Exploded view - noise insulation.

  1. Unfasten clamp (1) on longitudinal member (left-side) and take out coolant hose (2).
  2. Remove nuts (1) and detach coolant expansion tank (2) with hoses connected.
  3. Release and unplug connector at coolant expansion tank (2). [Note: Before removing poly V-belt, mark direction of rotation. A used belt can break if it runs in the opposite direction. Ensure that the belt is properly seated in the pulleys when installing.]
  4. Swivel tensioner in direction of (arrow) to slacken poly V-belt.
  5. Remove poly V-belt only from power steering pump pulley 13Cylinder block (pulley end); Exploded view - poly V-belt drive.
  6. Release tensioner and remove tool.
  7. Mark position of pulley relative to hub (arrow). [Note: If the power steering pump is being renewed, transfer the marking on the hub from the old pump to the new pump.Due to limited space, it is not possible to see the positions of the holes in the pulley relative to the holes in the hub during installation.]
  8. Remove bolts (arrows). Use pin wrench3212 to counterhold pulley.
  9. Take off power steering pump pulley.
  10. Place drip tray underneath power steering pump.
  11. Carefully cut through cable tie (1) for wiring harness (2).
  12. Detach hose clip (4) from suction hose (3). Pull off suction hose (3).
  13. If pressure line is also secured to A/C compressor, remove bolt (C) for bracket (D) from A/C compressor.
  14. Remove bolts (1) and pull pressure line (2) out of power steering pump.
  15. Seal off connections of power steering pump and lines with clean plugs.
  16. Unbolt power steering pump from bracket. To do so, remove front bolts (1) and rear bolt (2). [Note: Bolt (2) is concealed inside the bracket and has already been unscrewed in the illustration.]
  17. Remove bolts (1) from bracket (3).
  18. Release connector (3) and unplug.
  19. Remove bolt (1) and detach bracket (2).
  20. Remove bracket (3).
  21. To install power steering pump, drive back sleeve (2) slightly at bracket.
  22. Take out power steering pump. [Note: Renew gaskets and seals. Before fitting a new power steering pump, put in hydraulic fluid at the inlet and turn pump by hand until fluid flows out at the pressure outlet.Secure all hose connections with new hose clips Electronic parts catalogue.]

Who makes these pages, and how

TorqFix was built by a mechanic — after a 2,700 km drive with five roadside repairs that no diagnostic tool could explain.

The figures on this page come from manufacturer workshop documentation and are shown as they are. The page is assembled automatically from that data — it is not written by an AI. The AI works in the chat, where it answers for your specific car. It writes nothing here.

Variants of the same model differ. Cross-check torque against the factory manual for your engine before final tightening.
