Removing and installing gearshift gate: Audi Q7
Step-by-step removing and installing gearshift gate for the Audi Q7: 26 steps. What to remove, in what order, and what to check after.
The gearshift gate sits in the automatic selector shift unit of the Q7 (4L) and carries one of the two microswitches that make up gear selector position P switch F305. The shift unit has to come out of the car first; everything else is bench work. The guide funnel for the manual release lever is unclipped, the wiring is freed from the selector mechanism, bearing caps, locking plate and bottom bearings are levered off, and the gate is drawn out downwards, pressing the manual release lever if it binds. The microswitch is released by levering out its retaining pin. Reassembly is where it counts: bearings and moving surfaces greased, a new locking plate, and the microswitch seated flush, because the ignition key removal lock depends on it.
🧭 Before you start
Remove the shift unit, then unclip the release lever guide funnel and free the wiring. Prise off bearing caps, locking plate and bottom bearings and draw the gate down, transferring the microswitch. Check the stop buffer, insert the gate from below with axial bearings and mountings fitted, press in the bottom bearings, fit a new locking plate and the caps. Route the wiring as originally, confirm the microswitch is secure, refit the funnel and install the shift unit.
Fits: Audi Q7 (4L, 2005–2015)
Don't miss
- Use a new locking plate on the rear axial bearing.
- Microswitch must sit flush all round and be secured by its retaining pin.
- Lubricate bearings and moving surfaces with the specified polycarbamide grease.
- Right-hand drive cars have the stop buffer on the opposite side.
- Press the manual release lever if the gate will not come out or go in.

📋 Procedure
- Remove shift unit .
- Unclip guide funnel (1) for manual release lever and detach sideways in direction of (arrow).
- Disengage electrical wire at selector mechanism (arrows A).
- Use screwdriver to pry off the two bearing caps (1).
- Pull out locking plate (2) downwards.
- Use screwdriver to pry off the two bottom bearings (1).
- Carefully pull out gearshift gate (1) slightly downwards.
- Press down manual release lever (arrow) if gearshift gate cannot be pulled out.
- Lever off retaining pin (A) using a screwdriver.
- Detach microswitch (B). [Note: The gear selector position P switch F305 consists of two microswitches. Microswitch (B) is one of the two. The two microswitches provide the signal required by the electronic ignition key removal lock to release the key only in selector position P.]
- Disengage electrical wire at lug (arrow C) and detach microswitch from selector mechanism.
- Pull out gearshift gate (1) downwards. [Note: Lubricate all bearings and moving surfaces with polycarbamide greaseG 052 142 A2.]
- Check that stop buffer (1) is correctly seated. [Note: On right-hand drive vehicles, the stop buffer (1) is fitted on the opposite side.]
- Insert gearshift gate (1) from below.
- Insert microswitch (B) in gearshift gate and secure with retaining pin (A). [Note: The microswitch must be seated flush all around.]
- Secure electrical wire to lug (arrow C).
- Fit both axial bearings (2) onto gearshift gate (1).
- Fit both gearshift mountings (3) onto gearshift gate.
- Insert gearshift gate in housing of shift unit. Press down manual release lever (arrow) if gearshift gate cannot be inserted.
- Press bottom bearings (1) in on both sides.
- Press new locking plate (2) onto rear axial bearing.
- Install both bearing caps (1).
- Locate the electrical wire (arrows A) on the selector mechanism as shown in the illustration.
- Check that microswitch (B) has been installed correctly and is properly attached. [Note: If the microswitch is not correctly installed or not located properly, the ignition key removal lock will not function as required.]
- Install guide funnel (1) for manual release lever in opposite direction of (arrow).
- Install shift unit .

Who makes these pages, and how
TorqFix was built by a mechanic — after a 2,700 km drive with five roadside repairs that no diagnostic tool could explain.
The figures on this page come from manufacturer workshop documentation and are shown as they are. The page is assembled automatically from that data — it is not written by an AI. The AI works in the chat, where it answers for your specific car. It writes nothing here.
Variants of the same model differ. Cross-check torque against the factory manual for your engine before final tightening.
