Removing and installing gearbox neutral position sender G701 — AUDI
Removing and installing gearbox neutral position sender G701 on Audi: 8 steps. What to remove, in what order, and what to check after.
The gearbox neutral position sender G701 sits in the sealing cap of the selector shaft on the gearbox of the A4 B8 (8K, 2007–2015), A5 (8T, 2007–2016), A5 Cabriolet (8F) and Q5 (8R, 2008–2017), and changing it is quick once the car is up. The rear noise insulation comes off if fitted, then the gearbox selector lever is pushed forwards to engage 4th gear so the sender can be withdrawn. A single bolt holds it: unplug the connector, remove the bolt, pull the sender out and leave the sealing cap where it is. The new sender goes in with a new O-ring and a new bolt tightened to the specified torque, which is the part people skip and should not. Plug in, refit the insulation, done.
🧭 Before you start
Remove the rear noise insulation if fitted and shift the gearbox selector lever forwards into 4th gear. Unplug the electrical connector, remove the bolt and pull the sender out of the sealing cap, which stays on the selector shaft. Fit the new sender with a new O-ring into the sealing cap, tighten a new bolt to the specified torque and reconnect the plug. Refit the noise insulation.
Fits: Audi Q5 (8R, 2008–2017), Audi A5 Cabriolet (8F), Audi A4 B8 (8K, 2007–2015), Audi A5 (8T, 2007–2016)
Don't miss
- Engage 4th gear at the gearbox lever before pulling the sender.
- The sealing cap stays on the selector shaft; only the sender comes out.
- New O-ring and new bolt every time; the bolt goes to the specified torque.
- Road-test afterwards and confirm neutral is recognised; that is what the sender reports.

Who makes these pages, and how
TorqFix was built by a mechanic — after a 2,700 km drive with five roadside repairs that no diagnostic tool could explain.
The figures on this page come from manufacturer workshop documentation and are shown as they are. The page is assembled automatically from that data — it is not written by an AI. The AI works in the chat, where it answers for your specific car. It writes nothing here.
Variants of the same model differ. Cross-check torque against the factory manual for your engine before final tightening.
