Removing and installing fuel filler neck with expansion chamber — AUDI

Removing and installing fuel filler neck with expansion chamber on Audi: 18 steps, engines AFB, AFN, AJM, AKE.

The fuel filler neck with its expansion chamber on the Audi platform code listed below (4B, with the engine codes shown) is reached through the rear right wheel arch, and the job is dirtier than it looks. The tank must be no more than half full before the filler pipe is disconnected, and even then some fuel escapes. Access means the rear right wheel off, the heat shield above the right rear silencer detached (and the silencer dropped off its rubber mounting if it blocks the way), then the wheel housing liner out. Inside the arch the breather pipes, the filler pipe hose clip and the guard plate are released, the bolts come out and the neck is worked out with its chamber. The detail people miss is the earth connection: the contact tab goes under the filler neck securing bolt, and after refitting the metal ring on the neck is checked to the body with an ohmmeter for approximately 0 Ω.

🧭 Before you start

At the filler opening the retaining ring is levered out of the rubber cup and the cup pushed through to the inside, with the filler cap left on. From the wheel arch side the rear right wheel, the heat shield above the silencer and the wheel housing liner come off, then the cable tie, breather pipes, filler pipe hose clip and guard plate are released and the bolts removed so the neck and expansion chamber can be lifted out. On refitting the earth connection is positioned with its contact tab under the filler neck bolt, the connection is checked with an ohmmeter, and the liner goes back.

Fits: Audi A6 C5 (4B)

Don't miss

  • Tank no more than half full before the filler pipe comes off; fuel still escapes.
  • Leave the filler cap on; open only the tank flap.
  • Drop the rear right silencer off its rubber mounting if it blocks the heat shield.
  • Earth contact tab goes under the filler neck securing bolt, positioned as illustrated.
  • After installation, check filler neck metal ring to body with an ohmmeter: approximately 0 Ω.
  • Use hose clips of the original equipment type on every connection.

Who makes these pages, and how

TorqFix was built by a mechanic — after a 2,700 km drive with five roadside repairs that no diagnostic tool could explain.

The figures on this page come from manufacturer workshop documentation and are shown as they are. The page is assembled automatically from that data — it is not written by an AI. The AI works in the chat, where it answers for your specific car. It writes nothing here.

Variants of the same model differ. Cross-check torque against the factory manual for your engine before final tightening.
