Removing and installing fuel extraction pipe: Audi A3
Step-by-step removing and installing fuel extraction pipe for the Audi A3: 20 steps. What to remove, in what order, and what to check after.
Workshop procedure for AUDI — the exact step sequence and torque figures, straight from real workshop data.
🧭 Before you start
Fits: Audi A3 (8P, 2003–2012)
- Renewed: hose clips at fuel pipes
Don't miss
- When installing fuel extraction pipe in fuel delivery unit, make sure that fuel extraction pipe (E) is correctly fitted (in or next to reservoir housing of fuel delivery unit, depending on production period and version) .
📋 Procedure
- Switch off ignition.
- Remove cover beneath fuel filter (not fitted on all vehicles). [Note: This illustration shows the layout for vehicles with petrol engine and front-wheel drive (vehicles with diesel engine are not fitted with a fuel filter at this location).Depending on the vehicle model, the electrical connection to the metering pump (D) is either permanently attached or clipped in at the fuel extraction pipe (E).]
- Lower fuel tank as far as possible (same procedure as for fuel tank removal) Engine, mechanics; Rep. Gr. 20; Fuel supply system or Fuel supply system; Rep. Gr. 20.
- Unplug connector at metering pump V54(B).
- Unfasten clip and detach fuel pipe (C).
- Seal fuel pipe (C).
- Remove cover above fuel delivery unit (accessible when rear seat bench is removed) Engine, mechanics; Rep. Gr. 20; Fuel supply system or Fuel supply system; Rep. Gr. 20.
- Detach fuel extraction pipe (E) (and electrical connection to metering pump (D)) from retainers (F).
- Unfasten clip (G) and remove fuel extraction pipe (E) from fuel delivery unit cover.
- Renew hose clips at fuel pipes and secure them using suitable pliers.
- When installing fuel extraction pipe in fuel delivery unit, make sure that fuel extraction pipe (E) is correctly fitted (in or next to reservoir housing of fuel delivery unit, depending on production period and version) .
- Slide fuel extraction pipe (A) as far as stop (E) into grommet (B) (stop (E) is intended to prevent fuel extraction pipe (A) being inserted too far into fuel tank/reservoir housing). [Note: Air in the auxiliary heater fuel supply can lead to problems in auxiliary heater operation. To stop air from being drawn in by the metering pump V54 and conveyed to the auxiliary heater when the auxiliary heater is first switched on after performing repairs on the fuel tank or the fuel delivery unit, the fuel extraction pipe must be filled with fuel (bled) after performing repairs in this area. After working on the fuel system, switch on the auxiliary heater and let it run for some time in full load mode to check operation (at least 10 minutes).]
- Switch off ignition.
- Remove cover beneath fuel filter (not fitted on all vehicles).
- Unfasten clip and detach fuel pipe (C).
- Connect fuel pipe (C) to diesel extractorVAS 5226.
- Connect diesel extractorVAS 5226 to compressed-air system for workshop Fuel supply system; Rep. Gr. 20.
- Completely fill fuel pipe (E) with fuel by briefly extracting air.
- Connect fuel pipe (E) to metering pump V54.
- After re-installing the components removed, switch on the auxiliary heater and let it operate in full load mode for roughly 10 minutes.

Who makes these pages, and how
TorqFix was built by a mechanic — after a 2,700 km drive with five roadside repairs that no diagnostic tool could explain.
The figures on this page come from manufacturer workshop documentation and are shown as they are. The page is assembled automatically from that data — it is not written by an AI. The AI works in the chat, where it answers for your specific car. It writes nothing here.
Variants of the same model differ. Cross-check torque against the factory manual for your engine before final tightening.
