Removing and installing front seat backrest cover and padding — AUDI
Removing and installing front seat backrest cover and padding on Audi: 20 steps. What to remove, in what order, and what to check after.
Stripping the front seat backrest down to its frame on the Transporter T5 and T6 (7H/7J and 7E/7F platform codes) is mostly trim and upholstery work, but it has an airbag in it on older vans. Power goes off first and the battery is disconnected, then the arm rests, seat trims and cushion come off. The head restraint and its guides are pulled, the tensioning wires and upholstery clips released, and the cover is rolled upwards and unclipped from the padding before the cover and padding come off the frame. Two things decide the job: on vehicles up to 2010 the side airbag sits in the backrest and has to be removed properly, and the right head restraint guide cannot come out without breaking, so have a new one on the bench before you start.
🧭 Before you start
Disconnect the battery, then remove the arm rests, seat trims and seat cushion. Pull the head restraint and its guides, release the tensioning wires, upholstery clips and edge profiles, and roll the cover up off the padding. On earlier vans remove the side airbag, then lift cover and padding off the frame. Reassembly is the reverse, with the cover fixed to the padding using new upholstery clips and clip pliers.
Fits: VW Transporter T5 (7H), VW Transporter T5 (7J), VW Transporter T6 (7E), VW Transporter T6 (7F)
Don't miss
- The right head restraint guide is destroyed on removal; fit a new one.
- Vehicles up to 2010 carry a side airbag in the backrest; remove it before taking padding off.
- Use new upholstery clips at the original positions, set with upholstery clip pliers V.A.G 1634.
- Hook both tensioning wires back onto the frame before closing the cover, or it will sag.
- Disconnect the battery with the ignition off before touching anything near the airbag wiring.

Who makes these pages, and how
TorqFix was built by a mechanic — after a 2,700 km drive with five roadside repairs that no diagnostic tool could explain.
The figures on this page come from manufacturer workshop documentation and are shown as they are. The page is assembled automatically from that data — it is not written by an AI. The AI works in the chat, where it answers for your specific car. It writes nothing here.
Variants of the same model differ. Cross-check torque against the factory manual for your engine before final tightening.
