Removing and installing front exhaust gas recirculation pipe — AUDI

Removing and installing front exhaust gas recirculation pipe on Audi: 8 steps, engines CXEB, CXFA, CXGA, CXGB.

Removing the front exhaust gas recirculation pipe on the CXEB, CXFA, CXGA, CXGB and CXHA engines, for the platform codes listed below, is a short job once the throttle valve module J338 is out of the way. The engine cover (if fitted) comes off first, then the throttle valve module, and the washer fluid filler neck is detached to make room. Two sets of bolts release the pipe, and it lifts out. The part that people tend to skip is in the refit instructions: the EGR pipe is renewed after it has been removed, not refitted, and the gaskets are renewed every time. Plan for both parts before starting. As general workshop practice, clean the flange faces so the new gaskets seal properly.

8 steps 5 engine codes

🧭 Before you start

Remove the engine cover, throttle valve module J338 and the washer fluid filler neck. Undo bolts (1) and (2) and take out the pipe. Install a new EGR pipe with new gaskets, then refit the throttle valve module, filler neck and cover.

Fits: platform codes SF, SG

  • Renewed: gaskets

Don't miss

  • Fit a new exhaust gas recirculation pipe after removal; do not refit the old one.
  • Renew the gaskets every time the pipe comes off.
  • Detach the washer fluid filler neck for access rather than forcing past it.
  • General practice: clean flange faces before fitting new gaskets.

Who makes these pages, and how

TorqFix was built by a mechanic — after a 2,700 km drive with five roadside repairs that no diagnostic tool could explain.

The figures on this page come from manufacturer workshop documentation and are shown as they are. The page is assembled automatically from that data — it is not written by an AI. The AI works in the chat, where it answers for your specific car. It writes nothing here.

Variants of the same model differ. Cross-check torque against the factory manual for your engine before final tightening.
