Removing and installing fresh air and air recirculation flap control motor V154 (air recirculation flap control motor V113) — AUDI
Removing and installing fresh air and air recirculation flap control motor V154 (air recirculation flap control motor V113) on Audi: 21 steps.
Workshop procedure for AUDI — the exact step sequence and torque figures, straight from real workshop data.
🧭 Before you start
Fits: Audi A3 (8P, 2003–2012)
- Special tools named: VAS 5051
Don't miss
- Install the holder (A), taking particular care to ensure that the guide of the holder (D) is properly inserted in the mount of the intake housing (E) and that the holder is correctly engaged in both catches (B) and (C).
📋 Procedure
- ⚠ Problems with air conditioner (heater) operation following installation of incorrect component versionsThe different control motor versions can only be distinguished from the outside based on their part numbersThe connecting elements are sometimes very similar and cannot be distinguished at first glanceWhere possible, only remove a control motor once the new component and the corresponding connecting element is available for installation.Prior to installation, check carefully to ensure that the correct control motor and the correct connecting element allocated to it are being installed. If possible, only dispose of the removed components once correct operation of the newly installed components has been checked. — Switch on the ignition if necessary and wait until the control motor has reached its "“fresh air mode”" end position.
- Switch off ignition.
- Remove glove box General body repairs, interior68.
- Release the catches (B) and (C) for the holder (A) at the intake housing and detach the holder (A).
- Detach the control motor (B) (in arrow direction) from the intake housing. [Note: The connection between the gear wheels of the control motor and the air flow flap is designed such that the control motor can only be readily detached in the "“fresh air mode”" position (the intake opening for air recirculation mode via the fresh-air/air recirculation flap (A) is sealed off).If the control motor is in a different position and can no longer be moved, it is not possible to simply detach the control motor, but rather it must first be forced out of the mounting points (C). Take care not to damage the gear wheel (D) when doing so.] [Note: Until 10.2013, the control motor was supplied as a spare part with the fitted gear wheel (A) in the "“fresh air mode”" position. From 10.2013, supply of a control motor without the gear wheel (A) fitted has been gradually introduced. You must therefore correctly assemble the gear wheel and control motor.Only when the gear wheel (A) contacts the stop (B), can it be fitted onto the gear wheel of the fresh/recirculated air flap. Control motors which have been removed in a different position or actuated following removal cannot be installed. If the gear wheel (A) of the control motor does not contact stop (B) ("“fresh air mode”"), move it to the position required for installation.]
- Lever out connecting element (here gear wheel (A)) from control motor being replaced (or select from set of connecting elements) and install in new control motor being installed .
- Connect the removed control motor to the vehicle wiring harness (by way of the connector provided).
- Switch on the ignition (the heater control unit J65 / air conditioning system control unit J301 actuates the control motor such that it moves into the "“fresh air mode stop”" position).
- Wait until the gear wheel (A) of the control motor has reached the stop (B) ("“fresh air mode”").
- Switch off ignition.
- Switch off ignition.
- Connect the control motor to the vehicle wiring harness by way of the connector provided.
- Reach into the intake opening for air recirculationr mode and move the fresh-air/air recirculation flap (A) to the "“fresh-air mode”" position (intake opening for air recirculation mode closed).
- Insert the control motor (B) in the direction opposite to the arrow in the mounts (C) and position it on the gear wheel (D).
- To enable the gear wheel at the control motor (A) to be attached to the gear wheel of the fresh-air/air recirculation flap, the short tooth (C) of the gear wheel at the control motor must coincide with the short tooth gap (D) of the gear wheel at the shaft of the fresh-air/air recirculation flap (D).
- Route the wiring harness such that it cannot come into contact with moving components (e.g. control motor lever).
- Install the holder (A), taking particular care to ensure that the guide of the holder (D) is properly inserted in the mount of the intake housing (E) and that the holder is correctly engaged in both catches (B) and (C).
- Check the control motor. It must be held in position by the holder (A). Eliminate any clearance if necessary by attaching a piece of foam to the inside of the attachment points (F) of the holder (A). [Note: With the glove compartment fitted, the position of the control motor (and the flap) is no longer visible. It is therefore appropriate to check its operation before installing the glove compartment (vehicles with no air conditioner) or "Guided fault-finding" function of vehicle diagnostic, testing and information system VAS 5051 (vehicles with manually controlled air conditioner). If the two gear wheels have been assembled in the wrong position, the fresh-air/air recirculation flap will not reach its two end positions or the control motor will not run smoothly.]
- Switch on ignition.
- Check operation of the fresh air and air recirculation flap control motor V154 (air recirculation flap control motor V113) and actuation by way of the heater control unit J65 (vehicles with no air conditioner) or the air conditioning system control unit J301"Guided fault-finding" function of vehicle diagnostic, testing and information system VAS 5051 (vehicles with manually controlled air conditioner).
- Actuate the control motor in each case until the gear wheel (D) is on the "“fresh air mode”" stop or the "“air recirculation mode”" stop and then check the position of the fresh-air/air recirculation flap (A). It must be open (air recirculation mode) or closed (fresh air mode).

Who makes these pages, and how
TorqFix was built by a mechanic — after a 2,700 km drive with five roadside repairs that no diagnostic tool could explain.
The figures on this page come from manufacturer workshop documentation and are shown as they are. The page is assembled automatically from that data — it is not written by an AI. The AI works in the chat, where it answers for your specific car. It writes nothing here.
Variants of the same model differ. Cross-check torque against the factory manual for your engine before final tightening.
