Removing and installing curtain airbag with airbag igniter - Avant — AUDI
Removing and installing curtain airbag with airbag igniter - Avant on Audi: 20 steps. What to remove, in what order, and what to check after.
Removing the curtain airbag on the Audi A4 Avant (8K, 2007–2015) means dropping the moulded headliner first, so most of the time goes into trim rather than the airbag itself. With the battery earth disconnected and the ignition on, the airbag is released at the A-pillar bolt, the gas generator connector is unlocked with a small screwdriver, two cap nuts come off and the retaining tab clips are squeezed out of the body with long-nose pliers. Two things decide a clean result. First, clips and self-locking fasteners are renewed rather than reused, and threaded holes are cleaned. Second, the igniter connector has to click fully home with its locking element pressed in, and on the right-hand side the extra earth wires must go back under the cap nut.
🧭 Before you start
Disconnect the battery with the ignition on and remove the headliner. Detach the clips, undo the A-pillar bolt, discharge yourself and unplug the gas generator connector, then remove the cap nuts and squeeze the tab clips out of the body. On refit, clip the tabs in, seat the gas generator on its stud, tighten the cap nuts (with the earth wires on the right side), plug in and lock the igniter connector, secure the airbag with new clips and tighten the A-pillar bolt. Refit the headliner and reconnect the battery with the vehicle empty.
Fits: Audi A4 B8 (8K, 2007–2015)
- Renewed: self-locking nuts, clips for curtain airbag
Don't miss
- Renew self-locking nuts, bolts and the curtain airbag clips; clean threaded holes with a tap.
- Right-hand side: two earth wires sit under cap nut (2) and must be refitted there.
- Press the connector locking element in until it engages audibly, and check no wiring is trapped.
- Where the factory used one clip plus adhesive tape, refit with two clips.
- Reconnect the battery with ignition on and nobody in the car; clear K75 faults if shown.

📋 Procedure
- ⚠ Observe safety regulations for pyrotechnic components .Observe disposal regulations for pyrotechnic components . — Switch on ignition.
- With ignition switched on, disconnect battery earth wire Electrical system27Battery; Disconnecting and connecting battery.
- Remove moulded headliner .
- Detach clip (2) and, if fitted, clip (1).
- Unscrew bolt (3) for curtain airbag from A-pillar.
- ⚠ Before handling pyrotechnic components (e.g. unplugging the electrical connector) the mechanic must discharge any static electricity. This can be done by briefly touching the door striker plate, or similar. — Unplug electrical connector (1).
- To do so, use a small screwdriver (1) to release connector locking element (3) and detach electrical connector (2) from gas generator.
- Unscrew cap nuts (2) and (3).
- Disengage clips (1) of retaining tabs for curtain airbag from body by squeezing catches together with long-nose pliers or O-ring pliers (arrows).
- Take curtain airbag out of vehicle. [Note: Renew self-locking nuts and bolts when performing assembly work.Always clean threaded holes for bolts using e.g. a thread tap.]
- ⚠ Before handling pyrotechnic components (e.g. plugging in the electrical connector) the mechanic must discharge any static electricity. This can be done by briefly touching the door striker plate, or similar. — Clip clips (1) of retaining tabs for curtain airbag into body.
- Engage gas generator (4) at stud and hand-tighten cap nuts (2) and (3).
- Tighten cap nuts (2) and (3). [Note: Two earth wires are secured additionally with cap nut (2) on right side of vehicle.]
- Plug in electrical connector (1).
- To do so, attach connector (1) to curtain airbag igniter (2).
- Press in connector locking element (3) in direction of (arrow). This inserts connector as far as possible in curtain airbag igniter whilst at the same time locking it. [Note: Make sure electrical connectors are fitted correctly (as far as stop) and engage audibly.Make sure that wiring is not trapped.Renew clips for curtain airbag. If a clip and double-sided adhesive tape were used to attach airbag at factory, use two clips when reinstalling.]
- Secure curtain airbag with two clips (1) and (2).
- Tighten bolt (3) for curtain airbag at A-pillar.
- Install moulded headliner .
- ⚠ The battery must be connected with the ignition switched on. If pyrotechnic components (e.g. airbag or belt tensioner) are inexpertly repaired, this may result in unwanted triggering after connecting the battery. There must not be anyone in the vehicle while you are connecting the battery. — With ignition switched on, connect battery earth wire Electrical system27Battery; Disconnecting and connecting battery. [Note: If the airbag warning lamp K75 indicates a fault following installation, you must interrogate, erase and then re-interrogate the event memory .]

TorqFix was built by a mechanic — after a 2,700 km drive with five roadside repairs that no diagnostic tool could explain.
The figures on this page come from manufacturer workshop documentation and are shown as they are. The page is assembled automatically from that data — it is not written by an AI. The AI works in the chat, where it answers for your specific car. It writes nothing here.
Variants of the same model differ. Cross-check torque against the factory manual for your engine before final tightening.
