Removing and installing convertible top: Audi A4 Cabriolet B6/B7

Step-by-step removing and installing convertible top for the Audi A4 Cabriolet B6/B7: 24 steps. What to remove, in what order, and what to check after.

Taking the complete folding hood frame out of an Audi A4 Cabriolet (platform 8H) is a body job rather than a quick trim swap. The rear side trims and the hood compartment lid come off first, then the hydraulic rams on the bow and the lid are freed from their ball ends and laid in the compartment with their pipes still connected. After the wiring and the front/stowed switch unit are released, the main cylinders come off their pivots and the main support bolts are slackened before the frame is lifted out rearwards over the car. What decides the outcome is keeping the hydraulic system closed and undamaged throughout, and refitting every cable tie exactly where it came from. Window adjustment afterwards is part of the job, not an optional extra.

24 steps

🧭 Before you start

Strip the rear side trims, set the hood to its centre position and lift off the compartment lid after unhooking its operating cylinders. Detach the bow cylinders, unclip the pipes and lay the whole hydraulic set in the compartment, then unplug the right-hand connectors and free the harness. Remove the switch unit and the main cylinder locking pins, slacken the main support bolts about 2 turns, lift the frame roughly 20 cm, draw the cables up and take it out to the rear. Refitting reverses this, followed by door and side window adjustment and a function check.

  • Timing position: the crankshaft or camshaft is set and locked during this job

Don't miss

  • Hydraulic pipes stay connected: unclip them from the 6 holders and lay them aside, do not open the circuit.
  • Mask paintwork with covers and fabric tape before freeing the bow cylinders.
  • Every cable tie cut or opened must go back at the same location.
  • Plastic washers must be in the pivot points of the main hydraulic cylinders on refitting.
  • With the hood closed, check the raised windows run into the front and rear seals.

TorqFix was built by a mechanic — after a 2,700 km drive with five roadside repairs that no diagnostic tool could explain.

The figures on this page come from manufacturer workshop documentation and are shown as they are. The page is assembled automatically from that data — it is not written by an AI. The AI works in the chat, where it answers for your specific car. It writes nothing here.

Variants of the same model differ. Cross-check torque against the factory manual for your engine before final tightening.
