Removing and installing clutch — AUDI

Removing and installing clutch on Audi: 23 steps, 2 torque figures. What to remove, what to tighten and to how many Nm, what to check after.

This procedure removes the dual clutch from the gearbox on the platform codes listed below, with the gearbox already out of the car. ATF is drained, the clutch cover bolts are removed and the gearbox is turned vertical on the support. The supplement tool T40289 is bolted to the drive disc of the dual clutch, checked for secure seating and hooked to the workshop hoist so the clutch can be lifted out squarely. Set it down on a soft surface to protect the oil pump drive wheel, renew the O-ring, and check that the rectangular section seals on the clutch carrier turn freely and have axial play; if they do not, the clutch must not go in. Cleanliness inside the housing and the bolt tightening sequence are what make or break it.

🧭 Before you start

Drain ATF, remove the clutch cover bolts and stand the gearbox vertically. Attach the supplement tool, hook it to the hoist and lift the dual clutch out. Clean sealing faces, renew the O-ring and check the rectangular seals. Fit the centring tool, lower the clutch in while rotating it to engage the splines, tighten the cover bolts in sequence, fill ATF after refitting the gearbox and run the basic setting with the diagnostic tester.

Fits: Audi R8 (4S, 2015–)

  • Opens: gearbox oil
  • Special tools named: T40289/1

Don't miss

  • Set the dual clutch down on a soft surface to protect the oil pump drive wheel.
  • If any rectangular section seal does not move freely, do not fit that clutch.
  • Keep dirt out of the gearbox while cleaning the housing.
  • New O-ring must not be crushed; tighten cover bolts in the correct sequence.
  • Run the basic setting with the diagnostic tester after fitting a new dual clutch.

Who makes these pages, and how

TorqFix was built by a mechanic — after a 2,700 km drive with five roadside repairs that no diagnostic tool could explain.

The figures on this page come from manufacturer workshop documentation and are shown as they are. The page is assembled automatically from that data — it is not written by an AI. The AI works in the chat, where it answers for your specific car. It writes nothing here.

Variants of the same model differ. Cross-check torque against the factory manual for your engine before final tightening.
