Removing and installing canopy — AUDI

Removing and installing canopy on Audi: 8 steps. What to remove, in what order, and what to check after.

Taking the roof canopy off vehicles with platform code SG is mostly a two-person handling job. The canopy has to be wound out first, because the two bolts holding it to the aluminium rail sit on the extended support arms and cannot be reached otherwise. Once those are out, the canopy is retracted to its stop, pushed up at the outer end and lifted out of its bracket while a second mechanic takes the other end. If the brackets themselves are coming off, each one is held by a central bolt and three upper bolts, and a stepladder is needed to get at them. The main risks are dropping the canopy or forcing it out of the bracket before it is fully retracted.

8 steps

🧭 Before you start

Extend the canopy and remove the two bolts on the support arms that hold it to the aluminium rail. Retract it carefully to the stop, push it up at the outer end and lift it out of the bracket with a helper supporting the other end. To remove the brackets, take out the central bolt and the three upper bolts on each side. Installation is the reverse.

Fits: platform code SG

Don't miss

  • The rail bolts are only reachable with the canopy extended, so wind it out before anything else.
  • Have a second mechanic support the far end; the canopy is long and awkward to lift alone.
  • Retract the canopy right to its stop before lifting it out of the bracket.
  • Use a stepladder for the bracket bolts rather than reaching from the vehicle step.

Who makes these pages, and how

TorqFix was built by a mechanic — after a 2,700 km drive with five roadside repairs that no diagnostic tool could explain.

The figures on this page come from manufacturer workshop documentation and are shown as they are. The page is assembled automatically from that data — it is not written by an AI. The AI works in the chat, where it answers for your specific car. It writes nothing here.

Variants of the same model differ. Cross-check torque against the factory manual for your engine before final tightening.
