Removing and installing brake pads (PR 1LK / 1LH), TTS — AUDI

Removing and installing brake pads (PR 1LK / 1LH), TTS on Audi: 15 steps. What to remove, in what order, and what to check after.

Front pads on the Audi TTS with brake options 1LK or 1LH are changed with the caliper taken off and hung on wire, not left on the hose. Unplug the wear contact, remove the caliper, check the discs and press the pistons back, keeping an eye on the reservoir if it was topped up while the pads were worn. The fiddly part is the retaining plates: all four go into the pad contact surfaces with the small thin tab facing the inside of the caliper, and the main retaining plate is pushed through both pads until it audibly and physically engages, spring facing down. If used pads go back in, they return to their marked positions.

15 steps

🧭 Before you start

Remove the wheel, unplug the wear contact, remove the caliper and tie it up. Check the discs, press the pistons back and peel any protective foil from the new pads. Fit the four retaining plates, install the pads and slide the retaining plate through both pad mountings until it clicks into the caliper. Check spring and pad seating, reconnect the wear contact and pump the pedal before the road test.

Fits: platform code FV

  • Opens: brake fluid
  • Renewed: brake pads

Don't miss

  • All four retaining plates must be fitted, small thin tab towards the inside of the caliper.
  • The retaining plate spring faces down and must be heard and felt engaging.
  • Watch the reservoir when pushing pistons back; overflowing fluid damages paintwork.
  • Refit used pads in their original marked positions; renew pads across the whole axle.
  • Depress the pedal firmly several times before driving.

📋 Procedure

  1. Remove front wheel Running gear, axles, steering44Wheels, tyres.
  2. Unplug electrical connector on contact for pad wear indicator on brake caliper.
  3. Remove brake caliper .
  4. Tie brake caliper to body with suitable wire.
  5. ⚠ Risk of damage to brake hoseDo not leave the brake caliper hanging from the brake hose. Take care that brake hose is not damaged by weight of brake components. The brake hose must be renewed if it is damaged.Risk of damage to brake caliper pistonsDo not apply brake when brake caliper is removed. — Hold brake pads in place and pull retaining clip (1) (illustration A) out of brake caliper with suitable pliers.

  1. Check brake discs for wear Technical data for front brakes. [Note: Always renew brake pads on both sides of axle.Install all parts supplied in the repair kit when fitting new brake pads.] [Note: Use only methylated spirits for cleaning the brake caliper housing.Check protective caps on brake caliper pistons for damage; if necessary, install all parts supplied in repair kit.]
  2. ⚠ Escaping brake fluid can cause the vehicle to become dirty and may damage the paintwork. If the brake pads are worn and brake fluid has been topped up unnecessarily, brake fluid can overflow when the brake caliper pistons are pressed back into the brake cylinders. Before pressing the pistons back, check the brake fluid level. Brake fluid must be extracted if the fluid level is up to the "“MAX”" mark.Use brake filling and bleeding equipmentVAS 5234 to extract brake fluid from brake fluid reservoir. — Press brake caliper pistons all the way back into caliper using piston resetting appliance T10145.
  3. If fitted, pull protective foil off pad backplates.
  4. If used pads are being re-fitted, take care to install the marked pads in their original positions.
  5. Insert retaining plates (A) in brake caliper.
  6. ⚠ All four retaining plates must be inserted in the contact surfaces for the brake pads (as shown in illustration).Make sure the retaining plates are installed in the correct position .The small, thin tab faces towards the inside of the brake caliper. — Fit brake pads (2) (illustration B) in brake caliper.
  7. Slide retaining plate (1) (illustration A) all the way through mountings on brake pads.
  8. ⚠ The spring on the retaining plate faces downwards and engages in the mounting on the brake caliper. The retaining plate must be pressed through the mountings on both brake pads. You must be able to hear and feel the retaining plate engaging in the brake caliper.Make sure the retaining plates are installed in the correct position . — Install brake caliper with brake pads fitted . [Note: Make sure the brake hose is routed correctly. The brake hose must not be kinked, crushed or twisted or chafe against parts of the vehicle at any point.]
  9. ⚠ After installing, double-check that the retaining springs and brake pads are seated correctly . — Plug in electrical connector (arrow) on contact for pad wear indicator on brake caliper.
  10. ⚠ Risk of accident!Firmly depress the brake pedal several times with the vehicle stationary, so that the brake pads are properly seated in their normal operating position.Make sure that the brakes work properly before the vehicle is driven on the road. — Check brake fluid level and top up if necessary.
