Removing and installing brake pads (PR 1LF): Audi Q7

Step-by-step removing and installing brake pads (PR 1LF) for the Audi Q7: 20 steps. What to remove, in what order, and what to check after.

The Audi Q7 (4L, 2005–2015) with brake option 1LF uses a fixed caliper where the pads come out from above without taking the caliper off. After unplugging the wear indicator and lifting the wire away from under the dust cap, the retaining pin is drawn out while the spring is held down, the spring comes off and the pads slide out. The wear sensors are transferred to the new pads. Before the pistons go back, draw some fluid out of the reservoir so it does not overflow onto paintwork. The job lives or dies on routing the sensor wire properly under the spring tab and driving the retaining pin fully to its stop.

20 steps

🧭 Before you start

Remove the wheels, unplug the wear indicator and lift the wire from under the dust cap. Remove the bolt, press the retaining spring in, pull the retaining pin and take out the spring and pads. Check the disc, draw off some brake fluid and press the pistons back. Fit the sensors to the new pads, insert pads and spring, route the wire under the tab, push the pin to its stop, tighten the bolt, reconnect and seat the pads with the pedal.

Fits: Audi Q7 (4L, 2005–2015)

  • Opens: brake fluid

Don't miss

  • Draw brake fluid off the reservoir before pressing the pistons back to prevent overflow.
  • Push the retaining pin fully onto its limit stop while holding the spring in.
  • Route the wear indicator wire under the spring tab and secure it at the bleeder valve with the dust cap.
  • Check the wear sensors and wire for damage before transferring them.
  • Depress the pedal several times, then check the fluid level.

  1. Pull electrical wire for pad wear indicator out of brake caliper housing and out of retaining spring (1).
  2. Remove retaining spring.
  3. Push brake pads off brake disc and remove pads from brake caliper.
  4. If brake pads are to be renewed, carefully remove sensor and electrical wire for pad wear indicator from brake pads and check for damage.
  5. Check brake disc Brakes, technical data.
  6. ⚠ Before pressing pistons back into cylinders with piston resetting appliance, draw off brake fluid from brake fluid reservoir. Otherwise, fluid can overflow and cause damage, particularly if reservoir has been topped up. — Press pistons back.
  7. Carefully fit sensors on wire for pad wear indicator into new brake pads.
  8. Insert brake pads into brake caliper.
  9. Fit retaining spring (1).
  10. Insert electrical wire for pad wear indicator under tab on retaining spring and into brake caliper housing (arrows).
  11. Press retaining spring inwards (arrow) and push retaining pin (1) in onto limit stop.
  12. Tighten bolt.
  13. Reconnect connector (1) for pad wear indicator to connector on bracket on wheel bearing housing.
  14. Secure electrical wire for pad wear indicator at bleeder valve with dust cap (2).
  15. Fit wheels. [Note: After each brake pad change firmly depress brake pedal several times with vehicle stationary, so that the brake pads are properly seated in their normal operating position.Check brake fluid level after changing brake pads.]

Who makes these pages, and how

TorqFix was built by a mechanic — after a 2,700 km drive with five roadside repairs that no diagnostic tool could explain.

The figures on this page come from manufacturer workshop documentation and are shown as they are. The page is assembled automatically from that data — it is not written by an AI. The AI works in the chat, where it answers for your specific car. It writes nothing here.

Variants of the same model differ. Cross-check torque against the factory manual for your engine before final tightening.
