Removing and installing alternator - vehicles with 6.3 ltr. FSI engine — AUDI
Removing and installing alternator - vehicles with 6.3 ltr. FSI engine on Audi: 15 steps. What to remove, in what order, and what to check after.
On the Audi A8 (4H, D4) with the 6.3 FSI W12, the alternator is deep at the front and comes out towards the right. Before it is accessible, the front right coolant pipe, the lower longitudinal member and underbody guard, and the engine oil cooler all have to come off. The belt is then slackened off the alternator pulley, the coolant hose released, the connector unplugged and the B+ wire removed. The mounting bolts are backed out about 6 turns and tapped with a hammer to break the sliding bushes free before they are removed completely. Freeing those bushes, driving them back on refit and using the correct original-type hose clips decide whether the job is done properly.
🧭 Before you start
Disconnect the battery earth, then remove the front right coolant pipe, lower longitudinal member, underbody guard and engine oil cooler. Slacken the belt, detach the coolant hose, connector and B+ wire. Back the bolts out, tap them to release the sliding bushes, remove them and take the alternator out to the right. Drive the bushes back slightly, refit, reconnect and check belt running.
Fits: Audi A8 D4 (4H, 2010–2017)
Don't miss
- Back the bolts out about 6 turns and tap the heads to free the sliding bushes.
- Free stiff mounting bushes or the clamping force will not be adequate.
- Secure hose connections with the same type of clips as original equipment.
- Check and top up coolant after refitting the pipe and oil cooler, as general practice.

Who makes these pages, and how
TorqFix was built by a mechanic — after a 2,700 km drive with five roadside repairs that no diagnostic tool could explain.
The figures on this page come from manufacturer workshop documentation and are shown as they are. The page is assembled automatically from that data — it is not written by an AI. The AI works in the chat, where it answers for your specific car. It writes nothing here.
Variants of the same model differ. Cross-check torque against the factory manual for your engine before final tightening.
