Removing:: Audi A3 1.6 (APF, AVU, BFQ)

Step-by-step removing: for the Audi A3 1.6: 21 steps. What to remove, in what order, and what to check after.

The removal half of a job on the A3 (8L, 1996–2003) with the APF, AVU and BFQ petrol engines, clearing the front of the engine down to the lower intake manifold. After disconnecting the battery and removing the engine cover, the poly V-belt comes off once its running direction is marked, followed by the belt tensioner. The alternator is disconnected at terminal 30/B+ and its connector, unbolted and lifted out, and its bracket removed. Next the intake manifold changeover valve N156 and Hall sender connectors, then the secondary air pump motor with its hoses and bracket. Finally the spreader rivets and bolts holding the lower intake manifold section are released and the section is eased off the front between its lugs. Marking the belt direction and not cracking the lugs are what matter here.

🧭 Before you start

Battery off, engine cover off, belt direction marked, belt and tensioner removed. Disconnect and remove the alternator and its bracket, unplug N156 and the Hall sender, remove the secondary air pump motor and bracket, then release the rivets and bolts and slide the lower intake manifold section off the cylinder head from the front.

Fits: Audi A3 (8L, 1996–2003)

Don't miss

  • Mark the poly V-belt running direction before removal so it goes back the same way.
  • Disconnect the battery earth first; the alternator B+ wire is live otherwise.
  • Label the secondary air pump pressure hoses; they are easy to swap on refitting.
  • Press the manifold lugs apart gently; brittle plastic lugs break easily on older engines.

Who makes these pages, and how

TorqFix was built by a mechanic — after a 2,700 km drive with five roadside repairs that no diagnostic tool could explain.

The figures on this page come from manufacturer workshop documentation and are shown as they are. The page is assembled automatically from that data — it is not written by an AI. The AI works in the chat, where it answers for your specific car. It writes nothing here.

Variants of the same model differ. Cross-check torque against the factory manual for your engine before final tightening.
