Gearbox removal & installation: Re-determining shim "“S"6” for positioning 2nd speed selector gear — AUDI
Gearbox removal & installation — Re-determining shim "“S"6” for positioning 2nd speed selector gear on Audi: 13 steps, 1 torque figure.
Workshop procedure for AUDI — the exact step sequence and torque figures, straight from real workshop data.
🧭 Before you start
Fits: Audi A4 Cabriolet B6/B7 (8H), Audi A4 B6/B7 (8E), Audi A6 C6 (4F, 2004–2011)
- Special tools named: VAS 6320
Don't miss
- To make it easier to apply the digital depth gauge, the bearing mounting is not in its normal installation position in the illustration.
- Select correct shims from Electronic parts catalogue "“ETKA”".
🔩 Torque settings
Values can differ between engine variants — check the code stamped on your block.
| Torque | Fastener / step |
|---|---|
| 24 Nm (18 lb-ft) | Fit cover for final drive with O-ring installed and and tighten four bolts |
ℹ️ Always cross-check the exact figure against your vehicle's factory manual before final tightening — a wrong torque can damage the engine. These values are extracted from workshop data and may not cover every variant or revision.
📋 Procedure
- Set adjustment rings of universal measuring toolVW 385/1 to the following values:
- Assemble universal measuring toolVW 385/1 as illustrated:
- Insert universal measuring toolVW 385/1 with centring discVW 385/4 facing towards gearbox housing.
- Fit cover for final drive with O-ring installed and and tighten four bolts to 24 Nm. — 24 Nm (18 lb-ft)
- Using the adjustable ring, move the centring disc outwards until it is no longer possible to turn the universal measuring tool by hand.
- Position straightedgeT 40100 onto cleaned joint surface of gearbox housing.
- Measure depth between straightedge and highest point on universal measuring toolVW 385/1 using depth gauge (1) (e.g. digital depth gauge VAS 6320).
- Subtract height of straightedgeT 40100 from this measurement and add half the ∅ of universal measuring toolVW 385/1 to this calculation. This value is 16 mm.
- Install input shaft, shim "“S"5”, 3rd to 6th gears with roller bearing and bearing mounting (1). [Note: To make it easier to apply the digital depth gauge, the bearing mounting is not in its normal installation position in the illustration.]
- Position straightedgeT 40100 onto cleaned joint surface of gearbox housing.
- Measure depth between roller bearing inner race and straightedge using digital depth gauge (2) (e.g. digital depth gauge VAS 6320).
- Add the height of straightedgeT 40100 to this measurement. [Note: Select correct shims from Electronic parts catalogue.]
- The shim thickness "“S"6” in this example is 4.30 mm.

Who makes these pages, and how
TorqFix was built by a mechanic — after a 2,700 km drive with five roadside repairs that no diagnostic tool could explain.
The figures on this page come from manufacturer workshop documentation and are shown as they are. The page is assembled automatically from that data — it is not written by an AI. The AI works in the chat, where it answers for your specific car. It writes nothing here.
Variants of the same model differ. Cross-check torque against the factory manual for your engine before final tightening.
