🧭 Before you start
Fits: Audi Q7 (4L, 2005–2015)
Don't miss
- When pushing the engine and gearbox together, ensure that no wiring or pipes etc. can become trapped.
- Make sure that the selector shaft lever is not bent when pressing on selector lever cable (counterhold as required). — Carefully press selector lever cable (2) onto selector shaft lever.
- Never use a charger to aid starting. Otherwise, the vehicle's control units could be damaged. — Work steps required after installing an exchange gearbox or after performing gearbox repairs Cleaning ATF pipes and ATF cooler
📋 Procedure
- Check position (a) of torque converter
- ⚠ If the torque converter is not fitted correctly, the torque converter drive lugs or the ATF pump will be irreparably damaged when the gearbox is joined to the engine. — Check that dowel sleeves (A) for centralising engine/gearbox are fitted in the engine; install if necessary.
- Before joining engine and gearbox, turn torque converter and drive plate (on engine) until the holes and tapped holes are in line with the opening for the removed starter (arrow).
- When pushing the engine and gearbox together, ensure that no wiring or pipes etc. can become trapped.
- ⚠ The gearbox can be damaged if the torque converter is not fitted correctly. Before and while you are tightening the bolts on the engine/gearbox connection keep checking that the torque converter can still be rotated behind the drive plate. If the torque converter cannot be turned, the drive lugs on the ATF pump and consequently the gearbox will be irreparably damaged when the bolts are fully tightened. — Secure gearbox to engine.
- Use new bolts to secure drive plate to torque converter Parts catalogue.
- Working through starter opening, initially tighten new torque converter bolts hand-tight (turn crankshaft 1/3 turn in direction of engine rotation each time).
- Working through starter opening, tighten torque converter bolts to specified torque (turn crankshaft 1/3 turn in direction of engine rotation each time).
- Install starter 27.
- Install transfer box Transfer box and final drives39.
- Install ATF pipes
- ⚠ The automatic gearbox control unit J217 (mechatronic unit) can be damaged by electrostatic discharge.Do not touch contact pins in gearbox connector with bare hands. — Touch vehicle earth with your hand (without gloves) to discharge any static electricity.
- Fit electrical connector to gearbox and lock by turning fastener clockwise in opposite direction of (arrow).
- ⚠ Make sure that the selector shaft lever is not bent when pressing on selector lever cable (counterhold as required). — Carefully press selector lever cable (2) onto selector shaft lever.
- Secure sleeve of selector lever cable to support bracket with new retaining clip (1).
- Adjust selector lever cable .
- Align exhaust system so it is free of stress 26.
- Observe correct procedure after connecting battery 27.
- ⚠ Never use a charger to aid starting. Otherwise, the vehicle's control units could be damaged. — Work steps required after installing an exchange gearbox or after performing gearbox repairs Cleaning ATF pipes and ATF cooler
- Then check and top up ATF level .
- Activate jacking mode if vehicle has air suspension 43. [Note: Tightening torques apply only to lightly greased, oiled, phosphated or black-finished nuts and bolts.Additional lubricant such as engine or gearbox oil may be used, but do not use graphite lubricant.Do not use parts which have been degreased.Tolerance for tightening torques ±15 %.]

Who makes these pages, and how
TorqFix was built by a mechanic — after a 2,700 km drive with five roadside repairs that no diagnostic tool could explain.
The figures on this page come from manufacturer workshop documentation and are shown as they are. The page is assembled automatically from that data — it is not written by an AI. The AI works in the chat, where it answers for your specific car. It writes nothing here.
Variants of the same model differ. Cross-check torque against the factory manual for your engine before final tightening.
Seen a figure that does not match your manual? Write to us — we correct it and note when. support@torqfix.com
