Installing gearbox - vehicles with 6-cyl. 3.0 ltr. TDI engine on Audi: 29 steps. What to remove, in what order, and what to check after.
Workshop procedure for AUDI — the exact step sequence and torque figures, straight from real workshop data.
🧭 Before you start
Fits: Audi Q7 (4L, 2005–2015)
Don't miss
- Make sure that no wiring or pipes are trapped when bringing engine and gearbox together.
- Never use a charger to aid starting. Otherwise, the vehicle's control units could be damaged. — Checking and topping up ATF level.
- Clean ATF lines and ATF cooler after installing a replacement gearbox or performing repairs on gearbox .
📋 Procedure
- Check whether bearing bush (arrow) is fitted in rear end of crankshaft (knock in bearing bush as required).
- Check position (a) of torque converter .
- ⚠ If the torque converter is not fitted correctly, the torque converter drive lugs or the ATF pump will be irreparably damaged when the gearbox is joined to the engine. — Check that dowel sleeves (A) for centralising engine/gearbox are in the engine; install if necessary.
- ⚠ Risk of leaks at oil seal for torque converter. The caps prevent dust and dirt from entering the torque converter bellhousing. If necessary, retrofit caps. — Before joining engine and gearbox, turn torque converter and drive plate (on engine) until the holes and tapped holes are in line with the opening for the removed starter (arrows).
- Make sure that no wiring or pipes are trapped when bringing engine and gearbox together.
- Use new bolts to secure torque converter to drive plate Electronic parts catalogue.
- ⚠ Before and while you are tightening the bolts on the engine/gearbox flange keep checking that the torque converter can still be rotated behind the drive plate. If the converter cannot be turned, it must be assumed that it has not been installed correctly and the drive lugs on the converter or the ATF pump will be damaged when the bolts are fully tightened. — Bolt gearbox onto engine.
- Initially screw in the bolts on the torque converter through the opening for the removed starter hand-tight (turning the crankshaft 120° in direction of engine rotation each time). [Note: Tightening torques apply only to lightly greased, oiled, phosphated or black-finished nuts and bolts.Additional lubricant such as engine or gear oil may be used, but do not use graphite lubricant.Do not use parts which have been degreased.Tolerance for tightening torques is ± 15%.]
- Tighten the bolts on the torque converter through the opening for the removed starter (turning the crankshaft 120° in direction of engine rotation each time).

- Observe measures which have to be taken after connecting the battery Electrical system27.
- ⚠ Never use a charger to aid starting. Otherwise, the vehicle's control units could be damaged. — Checking and topping up ATF level.
- Clean ATF lines and ATF cooler after installing a replacement gearbox or performing repairs on gearbox .
- If gearbox was renewed, perform gearbox adaption . [Note: Tightening torques apply only to lightly greased, oiled, phosphated or black-finished nuts and bolts.Additional lubricant such as engine or gear oil may be used, but do not use graphite lubricant.Do not use parts which have been degreased.Tolerance for tightening torques is ± 15 %.]

Who makes these pages, and how
TorqFix was built by a mechanic — after a 2,700 km drive with five roadside repairs that no diagnostic tool could explain.
The figures on this page come from manufacturer workshop documentation and are shown as they are. The page is assembled automatically from that data — it is not written by an AI. The AI works in the chat, where it answers for your specific car. It writes nothing here.
Variants of the same model differ. Cross-check torque against the factory manual for your engine before final tightening.
Seen a figure that does not match your manual? Write to us — we correct it and note when. support@torqfix.com
