Installing gearbox, Audi A1 quattro — AUDI

Installing gearbox, Audi A1 quattro on Audi: 9 steps. What to remove, in what order, and what to check after.

On the Audi A1 quattro (8X, 2010–2018) the gearbox goes back in together with the engine, so bench preparation matters more than usual. Oil seals are checked for leaks and the cover in front of the rear splined shaft oil seal inspected. Input shaft and clutch hub splines are cleaned of corrosion, greased very thinly, and the plate is slid back and forth until the hub moves freely, with surplus grease wiped away. Dowel sleeves must be in the cylinder block and the intermediate plate engaged on the sealing flange and dowels. After installation the clutch is bled, the selector mechanism adjusted, and both the gearbox and the bevel box are checked for oil level. Missing dowel sleeves are the classic mistake on this job.

9 steps

🧭 Before you start

Install the gearbox with the engine after checking the oil seals and the cover in front of the rear splined shaft seal. Prepare the splines, confirm the dowel sleeves and intermediate plate, and check the release bearing, renewing the slave cylinder with bearing if worn. Once in, bleed the clutch, adjust the selector mechanism and check oil levels in the gearbox and the bevel box.

Fits: Audi A1 (8X, 2010–2018)

  • Opens: clutch fluid, gearbox oil
  • Renewed: if necessary

Don't miss

  • Missing dowel sleeves cause gear-change problems, clutch malfunction and rattling gearbox noise.
  • Wipe off excess spline grease once the clutch hub slides freely on the shaft.
  • If the release bearing is worn, renew it together with the clutch slave cylinder.
  • Check the oil level in the bevel box as well as in the gearbox.
  • Inspect the oil seals and the cover in front of the rear splined shaft seal before installation.

📋 Procedure

  1. Install gearbox together with engine 10Removing and installing engine; Installing engine. [Note: Before installing gearbox, check oil seals for leaks and renew if necessary.Check cover (4) in front of oil seal for rear splined shaft for damage and renew if necessary.]
  2. Clean input shaft splines and (in the case of used clutch plates) the hub splines. Remove corrosion and apply only a very thin coating of grease for clutch plate splinesG 000 100 to the splines. Then move clutch plate backwards and forwards on input shaft until hub moves freely on shaft. It is important to remove excess grease.
  3. If not already fitted, install dowel sleeves (A) for centralising engine/gearbox in cylinder block. [Note: If the dowel sleeves are not fitted, this will lead to gear-change problems, clutch malfunction and in some cases gearbox noise (gears will make rattling noises).]
  4. Make sure that intermediate plate is engaged on sealing flange (top arrow) and fitted onto dowel sleeves (bottom arrows).
  5. Check release bearing for wear. If necessary, renew clutch slave cylinder with release bearing .

Who makes these pages, and how

TorqFix was built by a mechanic — after a 2,700 km drive with five roadside repairs that no diagnostic tool could explain.

The figures on this page come from manufacturer workshop documentation and are shown as they are. The page is assembled automatically from that data — it is not written by an AI. The AI works in the chat, where it answers for your specific car. It writes nothing here.

Variants of the same model differ. Cross-check torque against the factory manual for your engine before final tightening.
