Installing gearbox: Audi A3
Step-by-step installing gearbox for the Audi A3: 73 steps, 22 torque figures. What to remove, what to tighten and to how many Nm, what to check after.
Refitting a manual gearbox, merged here from many variants, most with a bevel box and propshaft for four-wheel drive, under the platform codes listed below. Before the gearbox goes up, clean the input shaft and clutch hub splines and grease them very thinly, check the dowel sleeves and the release bearing with hydraulic actuator, and seat the intermediate plate on its dowels. The gearbox is tilted and raised on the gearbox support, pushed over the flywheel front first, then secured with new engine/gearbox bolts. The bevel box bracket bolts follow a staged sequence: A to 3 Nm, B (and C where specified) to 35 Nm, C to 22 Nm on some versions, A to 45 Nm. Then the mountings, subframe, drive shafts, propshaft, exhaust, clutch pipe and selector cables go back, and the clutch is bled.
🧭 Before you start
Prepare the splines, dowels, release bearing and intermediate plate, raise the gearbox on its support and slide it over the flywheel. Fit new engine/gearbox bolts and run the bevel box bracket tightening sequence. Align the mounting support arm parallel, refit subframe, steering box, drive shafts, pendulum support and propshaft, then exhaust, clutch pressure pipe, starter, power steering, selector cables and wiring. Finish with gear oil check, clutch bleeding and selector adjustment.
Fits: Audi A3 (8L, 1996–2003)
- Opens: clutch fluid
- Renewed: if necessary
Don't miss
- Grease the input shaft splines very thinly and remove the excess; surplus grease ends up on the clutch.
- Bevel box bracket: A to 3 Nm, B/C to 35 Nm (C to 22 Nm where specified), then A to 45 Nm.
- Align the mounting support arm and gearbox support exactly parallel before inserting bolts, or the threads are damaged.
- Leave the support bracket in place until both assembly mountings are torqued.
- A damaged propshaft flange seal means a new propshaft; guide the bevel box pin in carefully.
- Do not press the clutch pedal until the clutch system has been bled.

📋 Procedure
- Clean input shaft splines and (in the case of used clutch plates) the hub splines. Remove corrosion and apply only a very thin coating of grease for clutch plate splinesG 000 100 to the splines. It is important to remove excess grease.
- Check that dowel sleeves for centralising engine/gearbox are in the cylinder block; install if necessary.
- Check clutch release bearing with hydraulic actuator for wear and renew if necessary.
- Engage intermediate plate at sealing flange and push onto dowel sleeves (arrows).
- Tilt gearbox to the left by turning spindles of gearbox support3282.
- Raise gearbox carefully and move to installation position using gearbox support.
- Push the gearbox over the engine flywheel at the front first (arrow) and then at the bevel box side.
- Install gearbox.
- Install bevel box bracket prior to fitting engine/gearbox securing bolts.
- Fit new engine/gearbox securing bolts which are accessible from below. Tightening torques
- Screw in bevel box bracket bolts (A ... C) only a few turns at this stage.
- Observe the further tightening sequence:
- First tighten bolts (A) to 3 Nm. — 3 Nm (2.2 lb-ft)
- Tighten bolts (B) and (C) to 35 Nm. — 35 Nm (26 lb-ft)
- Tighten bolts (A) to 45 Nm. — 45 Nm (33 lb-ft)
- Screw in bevel box bracket bolts (A ... C) only a few turns at this stage.
- Observe the further tightening sequence:
- First tighten bolts (A) to 3 Nm. — 3 Nm (2.2 lb-ft)
- Tighten bolts (B) to 35 Nm. — 35 Nm (26 lb-ft)
- Tighten bolt (C) to 22 Nm. — 22 Nm (16 lb-ft)
- Tighten bolts (A) to 45 Nm. — 45 Nm (33 lb-ft)

Who makes these pages, and how
TorqFix was built by a mechanic — after a 2,700 km drive with five roadside repairs that no diagnostic tool could explain.
The figures on this page come from manufacturer workshop documentation and are shown as they are. The page is assembled automatically from that data — it is not written by an AI. The AI works in the chat, where it answers for your specific car. It writes nothing here.
Variants of the same model differ. Cross-check torque against the factory manual for your engine before final tightening.
