Installing exhaust system stress-free - vehicles with single catalytic converter — AUDI
Installing exhaust system stress-free - vehicles with single catalytic converter on Audi: factory workshop procedure for engines AAH, ABC, ACZ, AEJ.
Workshop procedure for AUDI — the factory write-up, straight from real workshop data.
📋 Procedure
ℹ️ Torque figures below come verbatim from workshop data — always cross-check against your vehicle's factory manual before final tightening.
ABC ACZ AEJ
Centre and rear silencers installed.
Mountings for exhaust system to gearbox installed => Fig.

.
Release the following bolted connections to the point at which the relevant exhaust system components can move in relation to each other:
1 -
Front exhaust pipe/exhaust manifold (left and right)
2 -
Left front exhaust pipe/catalytic converter
3 -
Front clamp
4 -
Right front exhaust pipe/left front exhaust pipe
-
Flange between centre and rear silencers
Align catalytic converter -A- to floor panel -B- so that distance -a- on the left is the same as distance -a- on the right.
Dimension b = 30 mm
Align catalytic converter outlet pipe -A- at a distance -a- to cross-piece -B-.
Dimension a = 92 mm
Note:
Arrow points in direction of travel.
Vehicles with manual gearbox and automatic gearbox 097:
Tighten bolts -1...3- on left and then on right front exhaust pipe to 10 Nm initially, then tighten to their final tightening torque of 30 Nm in the same sequence.
Vehicles with automatic gearbox 01K:
Tighten bolts -1...3- on left and then on right front exhaust pipe to 10 Nm initially, then tighten to their final tightening torque of 30 Nm in the same sequence.
All models:
Tighten screwed connection on right front exhaust pipe/left front exhaust pipe flange (25 Nm). The flange projections must be the same distance apart all the way round.
Dimension a = dimension a
Align clamps as follows:
Bolted connection -A- may point to the left or the right.
Dimension a = approx. 20 mm
Tighten screwed connection on front exhaust pipe/catalytic converter flange (25 Nm). The flange projections must be the same distance apart all the way round.
Dimension a = dimension a
Check that the screwed connections on the flange between centre and rear silencer are parallel to the brake pressure regulator bracket.
Dimension a at bottom = dimension a at top
Tighten boltad connections at flange between centre and rear silencers (25 Nm).
Push exhaust system towards front of vehicle until rear mounting of centre silencer is preloaded by a = 7... 9 mm.
Tighten bolted connections on clamp evenly to 40 Nm.
Notes:
The securing tabs at the brackets should be bent over about 90° after installing the retainers.
The distance -b- between the retainer and the locking tabs should be at least 2 mm.
Aligning tailpipes
Align tailpipes so that distance -a- is the same on both sides.
At the same time, distance -b- must be obtained between bumper cut-out and tailpipe:
Dimension b = approx. 38 mm

Who makes these pages, and how
TorqFix was built by a mechanic — after a 2,700 km drive with five roadside repairs that no diagnostic tool could explain.
The figures on this page come from manufacturer workshop documentation and are shown as they are. The page is assembled automatically from that data — it is not written by an AI. The AI works in the chat, where it answers for your specific car. It writes nothing here.
Variants of the same model differ. Cross-check torque against the factory manual for your engine before final tightening.
