📋 Procedure

Gearbox control unit safety functions
In the event of failure of one or more components/sensors, the
automatic gearbox control unit
J217
activates corresponding substitute functions. This ensures damage-free operation of the gearbox with the associated effect on the function and quality of gearshift operations.
A distinction is made between 3 statuses as regards faults detected by the multitronic.
The fault is stored and a substitute program permits further driving (possibly with restrictions). The driver is not informed of this status, as it is not critical to driving safety or to the gearbox. The gear indicator in the dash panel insert displays the currently engaged selector lever position in the normal manner
arrow
. If at all, the fault will only become apparent from the vehicle response and the driver will then automatically consult Audi Service.
The fault is stored and a substitute program permits further driving (possibly with restrictions). The fully illuminated gear indicator in the dash panel insert informs the driver that a simple fault has occurred
arrow
. Such faults are hardly perceptible. The fully illuminated gear indicator is however intended to inform the driver that Audi Service should be consulted as soon as possible to avoid any further damage to the gearbox.
Flashing of the gear indicator in the dash panel insert is an indication of a serious fault in the gearbox
arrow
. The condition is critical with regard to driving safety or the gearbox.
Caution
When the gear indicator in the dash panel insert is flashing, the vehicle could come to an abrupt halt or it may not be possible to continue driving the next time the vehicle is stopped.
Stopping at traffic lights for example could thus result in obstruction of traffic. The flashing gear indicator is a signal to the driver to stop at the next possible opportunity and inform, or if possible immediately take the vehicle to, an Audi Service Partner.
Note
In certain cases, it may be possible to restart the vehicle after a brief waiting period and continue driving. The driver should however always consult Audi Service without delay.
Failure of the
automatic gearbox control unit
J217
, e.g. on account of power supply failure, also prevents further driving.
Caution
When the vehicle is being towed, the selector lever must be set to position
“N”
. The vehicle must not be towed for more than 50 km or at a speed in excess of 50 km/h, as the gearbox would otherwise be destroyed.

Who makes these pages, and how

TorqFix was built by a mechanic — after a 2,700 km drive with five roadside repairs that no diagnostic tool could explain.

The figures on this page come from manufacturer workshop documentation and are shown as they are. The page is assembled automatically from that data — it is not written by an AI. The AI works in the chat, where it answers for your specific car. It writes nothing here.

Variants of the same model differ. Cross-check torque against the factory manual for your engine before final tightening.

Seen a figure that does not match your manual? Write to us — we correct it and note when. support@torqfix.com
