Draining fuel tank if more than 3/4 full — AUDI
Draining fuel tank if more than 3/4 full on Audi: 10 steps, engines CSPA, CSPB, CUNA, CHHC. What to remove, in what order, and what to check after.
Opening a fuel tank flange with the tank more than three-quarters full would spill fuel, so this page covers lowering the level first on the platform code listed below, with engines CSPA, CSPB and CUNA. The extraction hose of fuel extractor VAS 5190A is marked with tape at the set distance from its end and pushed in through an emergency refuelling funnel until the mark meets the funnel edge, which keeps it clear of the flap at the bottom of the filler neck. Fuel is drawn off until nothing more comes, at which point the flange can be opened safely. The flange is lifted slightly, its seal detached, and the hose fed in beside the delivery unit to take out the rest.
🧭 Before you start
Mark the extraction hose with tape, push it through the emergency refuelling funnel to the mark and extract fuel through the filler neck. When extraction stops, open the flange, lift it slightly, detach the seal and extract through the opening. If the delivery unit is coming out, draw the remaining fuel from inside it too.
Fits: platform code FV
Don't miss
- Push the hose only as far as the tape mark to avoid damaging the filler neck flap.
- Only open the flange once extraction through the filler neck has stopped.
- Detach the seal before feeding the hose in beside the delivery unit.
- Work with fire safety and ventilation in mind whenever fuel is exposed.

📋 Procedure
- Use insulating tape to mark the extraction hose (arrow) at a distance of (a) from the end of the hose. [Note: A flap (1) is located at the bottom of the filler neck (2) in the fuel tank; it must not be damaged by the extraction hose from VAS 5190A. Therefore, only push the hose in as far as the tape marking (arrow).]
- Push extraction hose from VAS 5190A through emergency refuelling funnel into fuel tank until marking on hose (arrow) is level with top edge of funnel.
- Extract fuel from tank via fuel filler neck.
- Pull out extraction hose carefully. [Note: When no more fuel is extracted, the fuel tank has been drained enough for the flange to be opened safely.]
- Open flange Removing and installing fuel delivery unit/fuel gauge sender.
- Pull flange slightly out of opening in fuel tank.
- Detach seal from opening in fuel tank.
- Insert extraction hose of VAS 5190A into fuel tank between flange and fuel delivery unit.
- Using fuel extractorVAS 5190A, extract fuel through opening.
- If removing fuel delivery unit: Push extraction hose from VAS 5190A carefully into fuel delivery unit and extract all remaining fuel.

Who makes these pages, and how
TorqFix was built by a mechanic — after a 2,700 km drive with five roadside repairs that no diagnostic tool could explain.
The figures on this page come from manufacturer workshop documentation and are shown as they are. The page is assembled automatically from that data — it is not written by an AI. The AI works in the chat, where it answers for your specific car. It writes nothing here.
Variants of the same model differ. Cross-check torque against the factory manual for your engine before final tightening.
