Connecting 68-pin adapter cableV.A.G 1598/18 A (test box) to low range gearing control unit J554 on Audi: 16 steps.
Workshop procedure for AUDI — the exact step sequence and torque figures, straight from real workshop data.
🧭 Before you start
Fits: Audi A6 C5 (4B)
- Special tools named: V.A.G 1594
Don't miss
- Prior to performing electrical checks, make sure the screen earth GND has been connected to a suitable earth point in the vehicle .
📋 Procedure
- Switch off ignition.
- Remove the lower A-pillar trim and the sill panel trim in the area of the front right door General body repairs, interior70.
- Unfasten the floor covering from the inner sill in the area of the front right door and fold up approx. 20 cm.
- Unclip the control unit from the electronics box (arrows).
- Release the multi-pin connector in (arrow direction) and unplug from control unit.
- Plug in the connector (A) at the multi-pin connector (B)(1) and lock this in arrow direction (2).
- Attach the connector (C) of the screen earth GND to a suitable earth point in the vehicle.
- Connect the control unit (D) to the 68-pin adapter cableV.A.G 1598/18 A (test box) (item 3) and lock in arrow direction (4).
- ⚠ To avoid damaging electronic components, select the appropriate measuring range before connecting the test leads and heed the test conditions. — Perform all listed "“Measures to be taken if reading does not match specification”".
- Only perform the test steps recommended in the fault table (specific approach).
- Prior to performing electrical checks, make sure the screen earth GND has been connected to a suitable earth point in the vehicle .
- On completion of the electrical checks, connect the 68-pin connector to the pins of the low range gearing control unit J554 and lock in position. [Note: Use is to be made for checking of the portable multimeterV.A.G 1526 B with test leads from V.A.G 1594 C or the vehicle diagnostic, testing and information systemVAS 5051 A with test leadsVAS 5051 A/7.The socket designations of the 68-pin adapter cableV.A.G 1598/18 A (test box) are identical to the contact designations of the low range gearing control unit J554 in the current flow diagram.Inexpert checking can cause system damage. No links should be fitted other than the connectors indicated in the test table. The specifications given apply to an ambient temperature of 10 ... 40 °C.If the measured values do not match the specifications, use current flow diagram to determine the fault. If the measured values only differ slightly from the specifications, clean sockets and connectors of testers and test leads (with contact sprayG 000 700 04) and repeat test. Check wires and connections before replacing components. Repeat resistance measurement at component, particularly in the case of specifications below 10 Ω.]
- Switch off ignition.
- Use leads from the adapter setV.A.G 1594 A or V.A.G 1594 C to connect up the multimeter (resistance measuring range) as follows:
- Attach the connector of the screen earth GND to a suitable earth point in the vehicle and repeat the measurement.
- Check contacts 1 and 2 of control unit to earth and the wiring if applicable .

Who makes these pages, and how
TorqFix was built by a mechanic — after a 2,700 km drive with five roadside repairs that no diagnostic tool could explain.
The figures on this page come from manufacturer workshop documentation and are shown as they are. The page is assembled automatically from that data — it is not written by an AI. The AI works in the chat, where it answers for your specific car. It writes nothing here.
Variants of the same model differ. Cross-check torque against the factory manual for your engine before final tightening.
Seen a figure that does not match your manual? Write to us — we correct it and note when. support@torqfix.com
