  11. Connect the contacts of the thermostat with a battery using test leads from V.A.G 1594 C.
  12. Using pliers, carefully place the thermostat vertically into a pot of boiling water up to the flange. [Note: The electric heating element now additionally heats the wax in the thermostat.Do not expose the thermostat to air during this test, otherwise the expansion element can become damaged.]
  13. Check whether the minimum travel of (a) = 7 mm is attained after 10 minutes.
  14. Disconnect voltage supply from battery.
  15. Renew thermostat . [Note: Renew gaskets and seals.Secure all hose connections with the correct type of hose clips (same as original equipment) Parts catalogue.]
  16. Slip intake manifold onto connecting hoses.
  17. Secure hose clips at connections using CLIC hose clip pliersV.A.G 1723.
  18. Interrogate and, if necessary, erase the fault memory for the engine control unit, as faults are stored when the connector is unplugged .

Who makes these pages, and how

TorqFix was built by a mechanic — after a 2,700 km drive with five roadside repairs that no diagnostic tool could explain.

The figures on this page come from manufacturer workshop documentation and are shown as they are. The page is assembled automatically from that data — it is not written by an AI. The AI works in the chat, where it answers for your specific car. It writes nothing here.

Variants of the same model differ. Cross-check torque against the factory manual for your engine before final tightening.
