Checking Hall sender 2 G163: Audi 1.8 (BAM, BFV)
Step-by-step checking Hall sender 2 G163 for the Audi 1.8 (BAM/BFV): factory workshop text. What to remove, in what order, and what to check after.
Workshop procedure for AUDI — the factory write-up, straight from real workshop data.
📋 Procedure
Checking
Hall sender 2
G163
The Hall sender supplies the ignition position for cylinder 1.
In the event of failure, the knock control is deactivated and the ignition timing retarded slightly as cylinder assignment is no longer possible. The charge pressure of the turbocharger is also reduced.
The engine continues to run without a Hall sender signal and can also be re-started:
If a fault is detected, the engine control unit triggers one ignition spark per cylinder on each crankshaft revolution.
The offset by one engine revolution has no noticeable effects on injection. Instead of taking place when the inlet valves are open, injection is
“advanced”
(to before the closed inlet valves). The quality of the mixture preparation is only slightly impaired by this.

Checking actuation
If fitted, push back rubber grommet at connector for Hall sender, but leave connector plugged in.
Connect up
voltage tester
V.A.G 1527 B
between contact
2
(Hall sender signal) and contact
1
(positive).
Note
The connector contacts are numbered accordingly on the back of the connector.
Operate starter for a few seconds.
The LED must flash.
Note
Voltage testers with a low current input do not go out completely between engine control unit actuation phases, they continue to glow dimly and become far brighter on actuation.
If LED does not flash:
Check power supply, signal wire and earth wire as described in the following.
Checking power supply
Unplug connector at Hall sender.
Connect up multimeter (voltage measuring range) between contact
1
of connector and earth.
Switch on ignition.
Specification: approx. 5 V
Checking signal wire
Connect up multimeter (voltage measuring range) between contact
2
of connector and earth.
Switch on ignition.
Specification: approx. battery voltage
Checking earth wire
Check for open circuit and short to positive in wiring between contact
3
of connector and earth.
Repair wiring if necessary.
If all the readings match the specifications and the light-emitting diode does not flash (measured between contacts
1
and
2
with starter operation and connector plugged in):
Replace Hall sender.
If readings do not match specifications:
Check wiring between Hall sender and engine control unit.

Repair wiring if necessary.
Possible problem if a fault relating to the camshaft sensor (Hall sender) is displayed again after erasing the fault memory on a trial basis despite all the preceding checks being successfully completed:
Hall sender rotor ring twisted
Unscrew Hall sender and check proper fitting of rotor ring at camshaft (incorrect installation results in squashing of retainer tab when tightening bolt).
If the rotor ring position is OK, check crankshaft/camshaft assignment

Who makes these pages, and how
TorqFix was built by a mechanic — after a 2,700 km drive with five roadside repairs that no diagnostic tool could explain.
The figures on this page come from manufacturer workshop documentation and are shown as they are. The page is assembled automatically from that data — it is not written by an AI. The AI works in the chat, where it answers for your specific car. It writes nothing here.
Variants of the same model differ. Cross-check torque against the factory manual for your engine before final tightening.
