Adjusting preload of ball bearing for flange shaft (left-side) — AUDI

Adjusting preload of ball bearing for flange shaft (left-side) on Audi: 14 steps. What to remove, in what order, and what to check after.

Workshop procedure for AUDI — the exact step sequence and torque figures, straight from real workshop data.

14 steps

🧭 Before you start

Fits: Audi A5 Cabriolet (8F), Audi A5 (8T, 2007–2016), Audi A4 B8 (8K, 2007–2015), Audi A6/A7 C7 (4G, 2011–2018); platform code 4X

  • Special tools named: VAS 6075, feeler gauge
  • Renewed: mounting bracket

Don't miss

  • The contact surface does not have to be sanded down to bare metal; it is sufficient to remove coarse dirt and corrosion.
  • The smallest of the 4 measured values is used to determine the shim(s).
  • The largest of the 4 measured values is used to determine the shim(s).The measured distance below the contact surface is taken as a minus value ("“–”") for the calculation.
  • Before installing flange shaft fit calculated number of shims 0B4 409 227(item 1) in bearing seat in gearbox.

📋 Procedure

  1. Attach emery cloth (grain size 150) to sanding block and clean coarse dirt and corrosion off contact surface (arrow). [Note: The contact surface does not have to be sanded down to bare metal; it is sufficient to remove coarse dirt and corrosion.]
  2. Clean contact surface and bearing seat.
  3. Fit new ball bearing (arrow) for flange shaft (left-side) in bearing seat.
  4. Apply straight edge (500 mm)VAS 6075 across bearing and measure distance to contact surface on gearbox housing on both sides using feeler gauge.
  5. Note down measured value.

  1. Re-apply straight edge at an angle of 90° across bearing and measure distance to contact surface on gearbox housing on both sides using feeler gauge.
  2. Note down measured value. [Note: The smallest of the 4 measured values is used to determine the shim(s).] [Note: Use only the method described here to measure the distance below the contact surface.]
  3. Apply straight edge (500 mm)VAS 6075 across contact surface on gearbox housing and measure distance to bearing on both sides using feeler gauge.
  4. Note down measured value.

  6. Note down measured value. [Note: The largest of the 4 measured values is used to determine the shim(s).The measured distance below the contact surface is taken as a minus value ("“–”") for the calculation.]
  7. Renew mounting bracket, ball bearing and circlip .
  8. Before installing flange shaft fit calculated number of shims 0B4 409 227(item 1) in bearing seat in gearbox.
  9. Install flange shaft (left-side) .

Who makes these pages, and how

TorqFix was built by a mechanic — after a 2,700 km drive with five roadside repairs that no diagnostic tool could explain.

The figures on this page come from manufacturer workshop documentation and are shown as they are. The page is assembled automatically from that data — it is not written by an AI. The AI works in the chat, where it answers for your specific car. It writes nothing here.

Variants of the same model differ. Cross-check torque against the factory manual for your engine before final tightening.
