Adjusting friction torque: Audi TT Mk1
Step-by-step adjusting friction torque for the Audi TT Mk1: 4 steps, 1 torque figure. What to remove, what to tighten and to how many Nm, what to check.
Setting the friction torque of the shaft bevel gear bearings by tightening the 12-point nut, on the platform code listed below (8N). The preload comes from crushing a spacer sleeve between the bearings, so the job is done in small steps rather than to a single torque value. The nut is first tightened to 120 Nm with the torque wrench turned clockwise through a 1/2" to 3/4" adapter, then the friction torque is measured. If it is still below specification, the nut is tightened a little further and measured again, repeating until the figure is reached. The trap is overshooting: a spacer sleeve that has been over-compressed cannot be reused, so it must be renewed and the setting started again.
🧭 Before you start
Screw the 12-point nut onto the bevel gear shaft and tighten it to 120 Nm with the torque wrench turning clockwise. Measure the friction torque. Increase the nut torque slowly in small increments, checking friction torque each time, until the specification is reached.
Fits: Audi TT Mk1 (8N)
Don't miss
- Increase the tightening torque slowly and measure friction torque at regular intervals.
- If friction torque is exceeded, renew the spacer sleeve and repeat the adjustment.
- Never reuse an over-compressed spacer sleeve.
- Turn the torque wrench clockwise when tightening.

🔩 Torque settings
Values can differ between engine variants — check the code stamped on your block.
| Torque | Fastener / step |
|---|---|
| 120 Nm (89 lb-ft) | Tighten 12-point nut |
ℹ️ Always cross-check the exact figure against your vehicle's factory manual before final tightening — a wrong torque can damage the engine. These values are extracted from workshop data and may not cover every variant or revision.
📋 Procedure
- Screw on 12-point nut for shaft bevel gear.
- Tighten 12-point nut to 120 Nm, then measure friction torque ; if necessary, increase tightening torque further until the required friction torque is attained. — 120 Nm (89 lb-ft)
- Turn torque wrenchV.A.G 1332 clockwise when tightening.
- Use an adapter modifying drive from 1/2" to 3/4". [Note: Increase tightening torque slowly and check friction torque at regular intervals. If the prescribed friction torque is exceeded, then the spacer sleeve must be renewed and the adjustments repeated. It is not possible to re-use a spacer sleeve that has been excessively compressed.]

Who makes these pages, and how
TorqFix was built by a mechanic — after a 2,700 km drive with five roadside repairs that no diagnostic tool could explain.
The figures on this page come from manufacturer workshop documentation and are shown as they are. The page is assembled automatically from that data — it is not written by an AI. The AI works in the chat, where it answers for your specific car. It writes nothing here.
Variants of the same model differ. Cross-check torque against the factory manual for your engine before final tightening.
