📋 Procedure

AKL
The adaptation process enables the engine control unit to learn the stop positions of the throttle valve control unit with the ignition switched on and the engine not running.

An adaptation must always be performed if the throttle valve control unit (J338) or the engine control unit is removed and refitted or replaced, or if the power supply to the engine control unit is interrupted.

Test conditions

No fault stored in fault memory
=> Page

, Interrogating fault memory.
Idling speed switch closed, Testing
=>Page
24-74
.
Throttle valve closed (throttle valve angle check by engine control unit), throttle cable correctly adjusted, Testing.

Connect fault reader V.A.G 1551 (V.A.G 1552) and select the engine electronics control unit with the "Address word" 01. When doing this the ignition must be switched on.

Display readout:

When Q is pressed the throttle valve positioner will move to the minimum stop limit (throttle valve closed) and to the maximum stop limit (throttle valve open).

The control unit records the voltage reading for each position in its non-volatile memory.

This process takes no more than 10 seconds. The throttle valve then remains still without receiving any electrical signals (voltage 0).

After each test requirement has been met try to perform another adaptation of the engine control unit to the throttle valve control unit =>Page

.

Note:

If the adaptation is interrupted by the control unit, the reason could be one of the following:

The requirements for the adaptation of the engine control unit to the throttle valve control unit have not been met. For a list of the requirements => see Fault Table, fault code 01087.
The throttle valve cannot reach the mechanical idling stop because of a build up of dirt (e.g. oil carbon deposits) or an incorrectly adjusted throttle cable.
Throttle valve control unit or wiring is defective.

After an interruption the fault Basic setting not completed; "Implausible signal" is recorded in fault memory.

The next time the ignition is switched on the engine control unit will try to perform the adaptation again.

End the engine basic setting by pressing the ⇒ key.
Press keys 0 and 6 for the function "End output" and confirm entry with the Q key.

Who makes these pages, and how

TorqFix was built by a mechanic — after a 2,700 km drive with five roadside repairs that no diagnostic tool could explain.

The figures on this page come from manufacturer workshop documentation and are shown as they are. The page is assembled automatically from that data — it is not written by an AI. The AI works in the chat, where it answers for your specific car. It writes nothing here.

Variants of the same model differ. Cross-check torque against the factory manual for your engine before final tightening.

Seen a figure that does not match your manual? Write to us — we correct it and note when. support@torqfix.com
