P0796 — Transmission pressure control solenoid malfunction

I got fault code P0796. What does it mean?

The transmission's pressure control solenoid C is not working properly or is stuck off. This solenoid helps regulate hydraulic pressure inside the transmission to enable smooth shifting. When it fails, the transmission may not shift correctly or could go into limp mode.

What causes P0796?

Common causes

The cause is almost always one of a few things. Here they are — P0796 rarely comes from anything outside this list:

  • Faulty pressure control solenoid C
  • Wiring issues or connector problems
  • Dirty or contaminated transmission fluid
  • Internal transmission valve body problems
  • Transmission control module malfunction
How do I fix P0796 — where should I start?

Where to start

In the order a sensible mechanic would work — the cheap checks first, the expensive replacements only after:

  1. Check and clean transmission fluid and filter
  2. Inspect wiring and connectors for damage or corrosion
  3. Test or replace pressure control solenoid C
  4. Perform transmission control module diagnostics
  5. Repair or rebuild transmission valve body if needed
And on my car specifically?

That is what holds for P0796 in general. From here it depends on your engine — tell me which car it is and what it does, and I will give you the steps for it: real procedures, torque figures and diagrams instead of general advice.

Who makes these pages, and how

TorqFix was built by a mechanic — after a 2,700 km drive with five roadside repairs that no diagnostic tool could explain.

The figures on this page come from manufacturer workshop documentation and are shown as they are. The page is assembled automatically from that data — it is not written by an AI. The AI works in the chat, where it answers for your specific car. It writes nothing here.

The same code can mean different things on different makes. Match the meaning to your make before acting on it.
