P0550 — Power steering pressure sensor circuit malfunction

I got fault code P0550. What does it mean?

The power steering pressure sensor or its circuit is not working properly. This sensor monitors hydraulic pressure in the power steering system to help the engine adjust idle speed and assist steering. The code appears when the sensor signal is missing, out of range, or the wiring has issues.

What causes P0550?

Common causes

The cause is almost always one of a few things. Here they are — P0550 rarely comes from anything outside this list:

  • Faulty power steering pressure sensor
  • Damaged or corroded wiring/connectors
  • Low power steering fluid or leaks
  • Faulty power steering pump
  • ECU or sensor calibration issue
How do I fix P0550 — where should I start?

Where to start

In the order a sensible mechanic would work — the cheap checks first, the expensive replacements only after:

  1. Check and clean sensor wiring and connectors
  2. Inspect and top up power steering fluid
  3. Test sensor output and replace if faulty
  4. Check power steering pump operation
  5. Replace sensor or pump if necessary
And on my car specifically?

That is what holds for P0550 in general. From here it depends on your engine — tell me which car it is and what it does, and I will give you the steps for it: real procedures, torque figures and diagrams instead of general advice.

Who makes these pages, and how

TorqFix was built by a mechanic — after a 2,700 km drive with five roadside repairs that no diagnostic tool could explain.

The figures on this page come from manufacturer workshop documentation and are shown as they are. The page is assembled automatically from that data — it is not written by an AI. The AI works in the chat, where it answers for your specific car. It writes nothing here.

The same code can mean different things on different makes. Match the meaning to your make before acting on it.
