P0040 — Oxygen sensor signals from two banks are swapped

I got fault code P0040. What does it mean?

The engine control module has detected that the signals from the front oxygen sensors on bank 1 and bank 2 are reversed or swapped. This can happen if the sensors were installed incorrectly or if wiring/connectors are mixed up.

What causes P0040?

Common causes

The cause is almost always one of a few things. Here they are — P0040 rarely comes from anything outside this list:

  • Oxygen sensors installed on wrong banks
  • Wiring harness connectors swapped or damaged
  • Faulty oxygen sensors sending incorrect signals
  • ECU software or calibration error
  • Aftermarket parts not compatible
How do I fix P0040 — where should I start?

Where to start

In the order a sensible mechanic would work — the cheap checks first, the expensive replacements only after:

  1. Verify sensor wiring and connector positions
  2. Check for damaged or swapped wiring harness
  3. Swap oxygen sensors to correct banks if installed wrong
  4. Replace faulty oxygen sensors if needed
  5. Update or reflash ECU software if applicable
And on my car specifically?

That is what holds for P0040 in general. From here it depends on your engine — tell me which car it is and what it does, and I will give you the steps for it: real procedures, torque figures and diagrams instead of general advice.

Who makes these pages, and how

TorqFix was built by a mechanic — after a 2,700 km drive with five roadside repairs that no diagnostic tool could explain.

The figures on this page come from manufacturer workshop documentation and are shown as they are. The page is assembled automatically from that data — it is not written by an AI. The AI works in the chat, where it answers for your specific car. It writes nothing here.

The same code can mean different things on different makes. Match the meaning to your make before acting on it.
