F4R engine — Renault 2.0 (2L I4 16V DOHC)

2L I4 16V DOHC · 136-280 hp · 190-360 Nm

The F4R is Renault's 2.0-litre 16-valve DOHC four-cylinder petrol engine, built from 2001 to 2015 in naturally aspirated and turbocharged (F4Rt) forms. It powers the Megane II RS, Megane III RS and Clio III RS 197/200, plus the Laguna II, Scenic II and Megane II 2.0 16V. On turbo versions, check for exhaust camshaft journal oil starvation causing cold-start ticking, and for a hardened turbo oil drain hose that pushes oil into the intake. Across the range, expect throttle body carbon with idle surge, a drifting coolant temperature sensor, swirl flap wear on variable-intake versions, oil pressure switch weeping and stripped plug threads on high-output engines. This page gives torque figures for the head bolts, crank pulley bolt, camshaft sprocket bolts, big-end and main bearing caps.

On turbo cars with cold ticking and gaps in the service history, do a cold-start oil pressure test and look at the rear exhaust cam journal before quoting parts. Idle hunting points at throttle body carbon and a missing idle adaptation. Black smoke or poor economy should send you to the coolant temperature sensor before injectors or lambda. Blue smoke on overrun with oil in the intercooler pipes means checking the turbo drain hose and sealing washers.

Check first

  • Cold oil pressure and exhaust cam rear journal on F4Rt engines with cam rattle.
  • Throttle body adaptation after cleaning, battery disconnection or ECU replacement.
  • Coolant temperature sensor and thermostat together when fuelling runs rich.
  • Turbo oil drain hose and single-use banjo washers when there is oil in the intercooler pipework.
  • Intake rattle with P2004/P2006: borescope for swirl flap fragments.
  • Timing belt at 120000 km, fitted with the flywheel TDC pin.
Values cited from a licensed workshop database. On the F4R, main bearing cap bolts: 20 Nm + 62° (TTY).

Known failures & weak points

On F4Rt turbo variants the exhaust camshaft bearing journals can suffer oil starvation because of a restrictive factory oil feed, most often on hard-driven or tuned examples; symptoms are cold-start ticking/rattling from the cam cover and, if ignored, camshaft lobe wear. This is a well-known Renaultsport issue commonly addressed with an uprated oil feed.
Turbocharger oil return pipe coking and seal failure (F4Rt) — at 80,000-130,000 km, the turbo oil drain hose (rubber section) hardens and the banjo bolt sealing washers crush-set, causing oil to back-pressure into the compressor housing; symptoms: blue smoke on overrun, oil in intercooler pipework, eventual turbo bearing failure; fix: replace drain hose and both banjo sealing washers (aluminium, single-use) at every turbo-adjacent service;
Throttle body carbon fouling and TPS drift (all F4R variants) — at 50,000-80,000 km, the drive-by-wire throttle body (Siemens/Continental unit) accumulates carbon on the butterfly plate causing idle surge, stalling at junctions, and fault codes P0507/P0506; cleaning with dedicated throttle body cleaner resolves in most cases but requires TPS re-adaptation via Clip/DiagBox (idle relearn procedure mandatory after cleaning);
Coolant temperature sensor (NTC) failure causing rich fuelling — at 70,000-120,000 km, the single-wire NTC sensor in the thermostat housing drifts low, signalling a permanently cold engine to the ECU; symptoms: black smoke, poor fuel economy, fouled plugs, failed emissions; often misdiagnosed as injector or lambda fault; always replace alongside thermostat (wax element fails similarly at same interval)
Inlet manifold swirl flap shaft wear (F4R 136hp NA with variable intake) — at 90,000-120,000 km, the plastic bushings on the swirl flap actuator shaft wear, allowing the flap to rattle and eventually break; broken flap fragments can be ingested into the combustion chamber causing catastrophic piston/valve damage; symptoms: intake rattle at 1,500-2,500 rpm, P2004/P2006 codes; inspect with borescope before condemning engine if rattle has been present long-term;
Oil pressure switch and gallery O-ring weeping. often misdiagnosed as rear crankshaft seal; always replace both simultaneously; confirm source with UV dye before authorising clutch work
Spark plug thread stripping in aluminium head (F4Rt high-output variants) — at plug change intervals (30,000-40,000 km), over-torqued or cross-threaded plugs strip the M14x1.25 threads in the aluminium head; use only OEM-spec NGK BKR6EK or equivalent, torque to exactly 25 Nm with anti-seize on threads; do NOT use thread repair compounds alone under boost conditions;
Clutch slave cylinder internal seal failure (F4Rt RS models with concentric slave) — at 60,000-90,000 km, the concentric slave cylinder (CSC) internal seal weeps, causing progressive clutch pedal travel increase and eventual inability to disengage; symptoms: difficulty selecting first/reverse when hot, grinding on downshifts; CRITICAL: always replace CSC when replacing clutch as access requires gearbox removal; failure to do so on a clutch job is a false economy;

Common torque specifications

Head Bolts Stage 1: 20 Nm all bolts in sequence (inside-out spiral); Stage 2: +100° angle; Stage 3: +100° angle; Stage 4: +60° angle — TTY bolts, single-use, must be replaced; total 4-stage procedure per Renault MR392 manual unconfirmed
Crank Pulley Bolt 40 Nm + 115° (TTY — replace bolt at every removal; use flywheel locking tool Mot. 1054 or equivalent) unconfirmed
Camshaft Sprocket Bolts 10 Nm (do NOT over-torque; use camshaft holding tool Mot. 1525 to prevent rotation) unconfirmed
Big End Bearing Caps 25 Nm + 44° angle (TTY — replace bolts; measure journal diameter before reassembly, standard 47.982-48.000 mm) unconfirmed
Main Bearing Caps 20 Nm + 44° angle (TTY — replace bolts at every removal) unconfirmed
Main Bearing Cap Bolts 20 Nm + 62° (TTY)
Connecting Rod Cap Bolts 20 Nm + 40° (TTY)

Pro tips from the field

On F4Rt turbo variants, ALWAYS perform a cold-start oil pressure test before any diagnosis — the camshaft feed galleries are only 3mm bore and a single missed oil change can cause irreversible cam journal scoring that no flush will reverse. If a customer presents with cam rattle and service history gaps, pull the cam cover first: scoring on the exhaust cam rear journal (furthest from oil pump) is the definitive tell. Quoting a cam replacement without this inspection is guesswork.
The Renault Clip/DiagBox throttle body adaptation procedure is mandatory after ANY disconnection of the battery, throttle body cleaning, or ECU replacement — without it the idle will hunt between 500-1,200 rpm and the customer will return. The procedure: ignition on 30s, start engine, allow to idle 3 minutes without touching throttle, then perform 'Idle speed programming' function in Clip. Many independents skip this and replace throttle bodies unnecessarily.
Timing belt replacement on the F4R is deceptively complex: the belt drives both cams and the water pump, and the tensioner is hydraulic. The critical error is failing to use the correct TDC locking pin in the flywheel — a belt fitted one tooth out on the exhaust cam will pass a visual check but cause fault codes and a noticeable power loss.
When diagnosing oil consumption on high-mileage F4Rt engines (>120,000 km), distinguish between valve stem seal consumption (blue smoke on cold start, clears after 30 seconds) and piston ring consumption (blue smoke under load/overrun, persistent). rings require a full rebuild. A 15-minute compression and leak-down test (>15% leakage per cylinder = ring wear) saves misquoting the customer entirely.
The F4R block uses a semi-closed deck design that is sensitive to head gasket retorque sequence. If a head gasket job is done without replacing the TTY head bolts AND without resurfacing the head (check for warpage >0.05mm with a precision straight-edge — Renault limit is 0.05mm), the gasket will re-fail within 20,000 km, typically at cylinder 3-4 bridge. Always measure, always resurface, always use new TTY bolts — this is the single most common comeback job on this engine at independent shops.

Who makes these pages, and how

TorqFix was built by a mechanic — after a 2,700 km drive with five roadside repairs that no diagnostic tool could explain.

The figures on this page come from manufacturer workshop documentation and are shown as they are. The page is assembled automatically from that data — it is not written by an AI. The AI works in the chat, where it answers for your specific car. It writes nothing here.

Variants of the same model differ. Cross-check torque against the factory manual for your engine before final tightening.
