D4HE engine — Hyundai 2.0 CRDi (2L I4 16V DOHC CRDi Common Rail)
2L I4 16V DOHC CRDi Common Rail · 136-185 hp · 320-400 Nm
Fitted to the Hyundai Tucson TL (2015–2020), Kia Sportage QL (2015–2021), Santa Fe TM (2018–2020) and Sorento UM (2015–2020), the D4HE is the 2-litre R-series CRDi: four cylinders, 16 valves, DOHC, 136–185 hp. The failure list is long for a young engine and mostly soot-driven — EGR cooler cracks from 90,000 km, swirl flap linkages fracturing from 80,000 km, VGT actuators seizing, DPFs clogging on urban cars. The one that costs real money is the high-pressure pump cam follower: it mushrooms and takes the camshaft lobe with it. PCV membranes rupture early and get turbos condemned by mistake. There are no step-by-step procedures on this page yet; it carries the torque figures for the cylinder head, crank pulley, injector clamps and main and big-end bearings, plus service intervals and chain inspection limits.
Blue smoke or oil consumption: pull the oil separator and test the membrane with compressed air before the turbo gets blamed. P0087 with hard starting: check the HPFP cam follower and borescope the cam lobe. P2004/P2006: strip the manifold and verify all four flap shafts physically, because clearing the code and handing the keys back is a liability. Cold-start rattle: check the upper guide rail groove, not just chain slack.
Check first
- PCV membrane first on any oil consumption or blue smoke complaint — not the turbo.
- HPFP cam follower: inspect at every 60,000 km oil change; lobe pitting beyond 0.3 mm means a new camshaft.
- Swirl flap play beyond 1 mm: replace the full manifold assembly.
- Guide rail groove deeper than 2 mm or chain slack over 10 mm: full chain kit.
- Forced DPF regen needs coolant above 70°C and battery above 12.5 V on a support unit.
- Oil: 5W-30 ACEA C3 only — C2 lacks the viscosity to protect the follower.

Common torque specifications
| Head Bolts | Stage 1: 30 Nm all bolts in sequence (inside-out spiral); Stage 2: +90° angle; Stage 3: +90° angle; TTY bolts — mandatory replacement on removal; total 4 stages per Hyundai SM; do not reuse under any circumstances unconfirmed |
|---|---|
| Crank Pulley Bolt | 200 Nm + 60° angle; TTY — replace on removal; use flywheel locking tool 09231-2B000 to prevent rotation unconfirmed |
| Injector Clamp Bolt | 25 Nm; do not exceed — overtorque cracks injector body at collar; use new copper seating washer each time unconfirmed |
| Main Bearing Cap Bolts | Stage 1: 20 Nm; Stage 2: +60° angle; cross-bolt side bolts: 30 Nm — TTY, replace bolts (single-use) unconfirmed |
| Big End Bearing Bolts | Stage 1: 20 Nm; Stage 2: +90° angle; TTY — replace on removal unconfirmed |
Figures marked unconfirmed could not be cross-checked against a workshop source. Verify against the vehicle’s own documentation before tightening.
Service intervals
| Timing Chain | Duplex chain, no scheduled replacement interval; inspect at 200,000 km or on cold-start rattle; tensioner and guide rails are wear items — replace full kit if chain slack exceeds 10 mm measured at tensioner rail |
|---|---|
| Oil Change Km | 15000 |
| Oil Spec | 5W-30 ACEA C3 / API CF (Hyundai spec 011-00-090); Castrol Edge 5W-30 C3 or equivalent; do NOT use C2 spec — insufficient HTHS viscosity for HPFP follower protection |
| Oil Capacity L | 5.3 |
| Coolant Spec | Hyundai OAT coolant (blue) — Hyundai Genuine Coolant or equivalent meeting Hyundai MS-591-08; 50/50 premix; do NOT mix with green IAT coolant; change interval 210,000 km or 10 years |

TorqFix was built by a mechanic — after a 2,700 km drive with five roadside repairs that no diagnostic tool could explain.
The figures on this page come from manufacturer workshop documentation and are shown as they are. The page is assembled automatically from that data — it is not written by an AI. The AI works in the chat, where it answers for your specific car. It writes nothing here.
Variants of the same model differ. Cross-check torque against the factory manual for your engine before final tightening.
