B47 engine — BMW 2.0 diesel (2L I4 16V DOHC Common Rail Twin-Power Turbo)
2L I4 16V DOHC Common Rail Twin-Power Turbo · 116-190 hp · 270-400 Nm
BMW's B47 is the 2-litre four-cylinder modular diesel that replaced the N47 from 2014: 16-valve DOHC, common rail, twin-power turbo, 116–190 hp, still in production. It runs in the F30 LCI 318d and 320d, F20 LCI 116d and 118d, F25 X3, F26 X4, F10 LCI and G30 520d, F15 X5 25d, G20 320d and the MINI F54 Cooper SD. The chain is far tougher than the N47's, but the tensioner still bleeds down and rattles cold. The costly fault is the high-pressure pump cam follower, worn out between 60,000 and 100,000 km on stretched intervals. Swirl flap motors seize in soot, EGR coolers shed fragments into the intake, map thermostats stick open and DPFs clog on short-trip cars. No procedures are on this page yet — it carries torque figures for the cylinder head, crank pulley, bearing caps, injector clamps, fuel rail and sump plug, plus intervals and chain limits.
Separate the two cold-start noises first: tensioner rattle fades within 3–5 seconds from the front of the engine, injector clatter is immediate and louder under load. A cylinder contribution test and rail pressure rise time will tell you whether the follower is the real cause before a chain kit goes on. Hard start with 13B0: cam follower. Engine never warms: map thermostat (4A82), and replace the hose O-rings with it.
Check first
Cold-start rattle: tensioner if it fades in 3–5 seconds; injector clatter if continuous.
HPFP cam follower: inspect at every cam cover removal; wear starts at 60,000 km.
Oil must be 5W-30 LL-04 at 15,000 km — longer intervals kill the follower.
Diesel smell in the oil after interrupted regens: change it immediately.
Chain replaced in situ: time the oil pump chain too, then confirm above 1.5 bar at warm idle.
DMF clonk on tip-in at 150,000–200,000 km: clutch, DMF and rear main seal as a set.
The EGR cooler's internal components can fracture over time and shed fragments into the intake manifold and combustion chambers, causing white/grey smoke on cold start, rough idle, and EGR-related fault codes.
Swirl flap actuator failure at 90,000-150,000 km: the intake manifold swirl flap motor (Pierburg unit) seizes or strips internal gears due to soot accumulation. Symptoms: DTC 10CC0 or 10CC1, loss of low-end torque, increased smoke on acceleration. Strongly recommend walnut blasting intake ports simultaneously.
High-pressure fuel pump (HPFP) cam follower wear at 60,000-100,000 km: the roller follower on the camshaft lobe driving the Bosch CP4.1 high-pressure pump exhibits accelerated wear if oil change intervals are extended beyond 20,000 km or low-quality oil is used. Symptoms: hard start, extended cranking, DTC 13B0 (rail pressure too low), injector return flow out of spec. Inspect follower at every cam cover removal.
Timing chain tensioner hydraulic leak-down at 120,000-180,000 km: the primary chain tensioner loses oil pressure retention after extended cold-soak periods, causing a characteristic 2-4 second cold-start rattle before oil pressure builds. Root cause is tensioner check-valve wear. Unlike the N47 which had catastrophic chain guide failures, the B47 chain system is more robust but tensioner failure left unaddressed leads to chain stretch and VVT cam phaser rattle.
Diesel particulate filter (DPF) premature clogging at 80,000-130,000 km on vehicles used predominantly for short urban trips: the B47 requires sustained RPM above 2,000 for passive regeneration. Soot loading triggers active regen but frequent interruptions cause additive (Eolys fluid on some markets) depletion and ash accumulation. Symptoms: DTC 4530, power reduction, excessive fuel consumption. Forced regen via ISTA/INPA first;
Thermostat housing and map-controlled thermostat failure at 100,000-140,000 km: the electrically-controlled thermostat (opens at 105°C under load, 95°C at cruise) develops internal seal failure or the wax element sticks open. Symptoms: engine never reaches normal operating temperature, increased fuel consumption 10-15%, DTC 4A82. Critical: always replace coolant hose O-rings simultaneously as they harden and weep. Bleed cooling system via ISTA to activate electric water pump correctly.
Injector return line banjo bolt O-ring failure at 70,000-110,000 km: the high-pressure injector return circuit uses small Viton O-rings on banjo fittings that harden and crack, causing diesel weeping onto the cam cover and creating a fire risk and fuel dilution of oil. Symptoms: diesel smell in engine bay, oil level rising, visible staining on cam cover. Often misdiagnosed as cam cover gasket leak.
Vacuum pump (tandem pump) diaphragm failure at 100,000-160,000 km: the combined vacuum/oil pump unit develops diaphragm cracks allowing engine oil to be drawn into the brake servo vacuum circuit. Symptoms: oil contamination in brake vacuum hose, reduced brake servo assistance, oil consumption without visible external leak. Always replace the vacuum hose to the brake servo simultaneously as oil contamination degrades the rubber internally.
Common torque specifications
Head Bolts
Stage 1: 20 Nm; Stage 2: +90°; Stage 3: +90°; Stage 4: +90° — TTY bolts, single use only, replace on every removal; total angle 270° after initial 20 Nm seating unconfirmed
Crank Pulley Bolt
410 Nm + 45° — TTY, replace on every removal; use flywheel locking tool BMW 11 9 190 to prevent rotation unconfirmed
7 Nm — critical: do not exceed; overtorque cracks the injector clamp foot and causes injector lift unconfirmed
High-pressure Fuel Rail Bolts
20 Nm — torque in cross pattern; do not reuse copper sealing washers on HP line unions unconfirmed
Sump Drain Plug
25 Nm — replace aluminium sealing washer every oil change; thread is M12x1.5 in aluminium sump, easy to strip if overtorqued unconfirmed

Pro tips from the field
When diagnosing cold-start rattle on the B47, distinguish between chain tensioner rattle (disappears within 3-5 seconds as oil pressure builds, heard from front of engine) versus injector mechanical clatter (present immediately and continuous, louder under load). Many shops replace the full chain kit unnecessarily — perform a cylinder contribution test and check rail pressure rise time first; a weak HPFP cam follower causes injector clatter that mimics chain noise.
The B47 uses a dual-mass flywheel (DMF) with a known wear pattern: at 150,000-200,000 km the DMF spring pack fatigues and causes a characteristic 'clonk' on tip-in/tip-out at low RPM. Always replace clutch, DMF, and rear main seal as a set to avoid repeat gearbox removal.
The oil cooler's internal bypass valve can stick, allowing full oil flow through the cooler even when cold, which accelerates HPFP cam-follower wear in cold climates. Inspect the bypass valve in the filter housing at service if the vehicle regularly runs in low ambient temperatures.
Active DPF regeneration injects post-combustion fuel that can dilute the sump oil if the regen cycle is repeatedly interrupted. Check oil level and smell before and after a forced regeneration, and change the oil immediately if it smells of diesel or is over max.
Unlike the N47 where timing chain replacement required engine removal on some applications, the B47 chain can be replaced in-situ on most F-series platforms with the engine tilted forward using a support bracket. However, the B47 requires the oil pump chain to be timed simultaneously — a step frequently skipped by technicians familiar with N47 procedure. Incorrect oil pump chain timing causes immediate low oil pressure at idle; always verify with ISTA oil pressure live data (target: >1.5 bar at idle warm) before returning the vehicle.
